Show dread spread of cattle disease to present the possible spread of the foot ind mouth disease the nest or into kotlier states than those in which it has already been found all available members of the various offices of the bureau of animal industry ire being hurried to the mississippi sis sippi valley and the east where they will natch for outbreaks and take immediate steps to check them four members of the local office drs J T dallas W T huffman R A broadhurst and H L me donal 1 left this afternoon for olno to loin the forces of federal veterinarians in the campaign against the dreaded disease spread of the foot and mouth asi ense into the ranges of the west would in the opinion of local officials of the bureau it entirely beyond the re din of control and hope of its eradication would thereafter be a physical impossibility both because of the size and the geographical condition every effort therefore will be made to prevent its western advance as well as to entirely stamp it out in the east already federal reports show that the disease has spread into massachusetts chu new york pennsylvania rhode island indiana illinois lowa Ohio maryland and michigan in these states the strictest methods possible ore are being taken by the federal and state governments and at the expense of the entire herds that hate been exposed the authorities will proceed in their campaign to annihilate the terrible epidemic every infected or exposed animal is leing killed at once entire herds be ing destroyed when individuals in them have been found with the disease in order to compensate the owners at least in part for their losses the government and the respective states pay moderate prices for every animal destroyed in all cases the owners willingly submit as they are conscious of the danger to their entire herds through the breaking out of the infection in any animal the foot and mouth disease is considered the worst cattle disease known because of ita fatal effect upon the animals the ease niter which it may be communicated the difficulty with which its advance is checked and the losada generally suffered by owners and the public nhen it once has a hold it is not connner to cattle alone but spreads to shead hogs goats and even to mankind although not fatal the disease has an effect on the animals attacked that is almost equally harmful immediate losa in flesh and milk are the chief commercial injuries the animals being made extremely lame and their mouths so effected as to make feeding difficult from 2 to 15 days from the time of exposure are required to develop the disease and generally in six days its symptoms are manifest chief among these are profuse slobbering slob bering and ulcerations of the mucus membrane of the mouth as well as about the feet with slight dampness lamp ness the latter growing as the disease progresses rapid loss of flesh and decrease of milk follow only about one per betit of the cases prove fatal but the commercial losses through the disease when once well grounded are almouist inestimable and destruction are the two only means of eradicating the disease there is no known cure and in such countries as ar gantma and parts of europe eliere its progress lias reached districts that cannot be disinfect edthe plague continues unchecked in quarantined sections of the east all infected and exposed animals are killed and burned and the entire area oer which they haie pastured is bisin fectea this is done by first burning all loose matter and then by saturating the soil with a solution of waier and carbolic acid in parti of 95 and 0 per cent respectively spread of the disease is even more rapid than with cholera rats birds animals of practically all kinds including men may transmit it it is thought to le a germ disease and bits of contaminated soil carried from one section to another are often responsible for the spread straw that has been infected may also transmit the disease hence the necessity of both and burning i f ask although men are susceptible to the foot and mouth disease the cases are rire there 13 now one ic cordine to reports in mississippi the effect on men however ia different from that on cattle fevers being the chief result A number of cases have have been reported in one through eating the flesh of an infected animal and one from drinking infected there have been outbreaks of the foot and mouth disease in america the first was in 1870 ten years later was a second and another fol bowed in 1884 in 1902 1903 the fourth outbreak was successfully overcome and the latest prior to the present one occurred in 1908 officials of the bureau ol 01 animal in austry expect that at months and probably pro bibly considerably boorer will be required to overcome the present outbreak deseret v |
