Show may cut timber on public lands that the r il lations governing cutting of timber on public lands are not generally understood by the settlers is the opinion of captain G E hiir chief of the tenth field service division of the united states general land office with headquarters in the local federal building in explaining the regulations yester dav captain hair said every resident of the state is entitled to take timber from public lands for his own use for agricultural mining manufacturing 01 domestic purposes in a quantity not to exceed soo worth stumpage value in any one continuous period of twelve months without filing formal application with the general land office authorities however before proceeding to cut and demoe this amount of timber the residents desiring it mut first notify me by registered letter that he intends to cut timber on vacant unreserved mineral or as the case may be public lands and must set forth alie kind and quantity of timber to be cut and a description of the land on which the cutting is to be done by township and ranee and by and sectional subdivision if the land be surveyed or by natural objects or landmarks a mountain cannon etc sufficient to identify the land if it be issuance of formal licenses in lucli cases is not required return registry receipt being deemed sufficient evidence of permit to cut should a greater amount of timber be wanted by a settler than worth or should several settlers desire some one individual to act as agent to cut and remove timber formal application must be made signed by all settlers wanting timber and this application must be sent to me and if application is found to be bona fide I 1 will issue a formal license to the agent author him to proceed with alic cutting application blanks will be furnished free of charge to anyone applying TO cut timber aiom public lands without first complying with instructions as outlined is held b alie courts to be a trespass there is no necessity for residents to cut timber in trespass tres it ia too easy to procure legitimately for a resident to take chances stealing it thus laang himself liable to civil and criminal prosecution in alie united stites courts tribune |
