Show A GOOD BILL elsewhere in this issue appears a copy of house bill no 85 introduced in the state legislature by mr cardon which provides for a nationwide nation wide plan of publicity concerning utah it plans to permanently maintain in salt lake city and ogden eln bits from the several counties of the state which are to have equal space and privileges the commission provided for in the bill is to serve without pay and no member is to servo as secretary or salaney officer utah has not mado the progress during recent years that kotlier western states with less inducements to offer have made and this is especially true of the remote portions of the state those portions that aro distant from railroads in some of the more isolated of counties the population has actually decreased during recent ears while borne others show deiy little increase in population and material development that such a condition exists 11 proof that something is radically wrong what is it when the sturdy pioneers branched out into the waste places of utah they toiled unceasingly until they had made g irdon spots of the desert the climate and soil was good hardly better anywhere and the sun bright and clear more days in the year than it had in other these settlers had lived the pioneers red they suffered great hardships in the early davs poor and insufficient food trouble with irrigation canals in anns and various others yet they struggled on until they made good daims had cattle on the ranges and were able to live in fair comfort still comparatively few were added to the number who settled these places capital to build roads budges and make other esai bis improvements did not come in and the eitt lers found mants and the installation of extensive negation nn gation works were beyond their means consequently only the land that could be watered by means within the settlers reach was irrigated the best land in many cases remained desert and a good deal of it is so today even the natural increase in population did not all stay they found conditions too and alie best young blood etring brainy and brawny young men left for idaho canada and other places development was more rapid and eliere they made good why were and are those conditions so slow as to foice the strong ambitious men ato sick elsewhere aliat they could not find at limo many reasons may be advanced but we think two aie chief ly responsible the first af which is that utah was grossly od and people generally looked on it as a place to bu avoided and the second reason is that utah has not sufficiently demonstrated what wonderful opportunities ire acio for the capitalist and the good industrious settler the aim of the butali development commission bill is to remedy these conditions by means which are clearly get forth jn the bill no i A V one county more than another 13 to be bene fitted all are to sharo alike in the exhibit space literature etc nothing fairer could be proposed what a exhibit could bo made by dixie it would attract the attention of all who saw it and result in a big change for dixie iron kane beaver wayna diute piute grand garfield and other counties similarly situated is to railroad transportation settlement and mitcel advancement could all show whit wonderful riches are contained within their borders locked up by conditions that can be improved and aich will be improved by the utah development commission if alic bill now before the house is made a law the utah development league suggests eliat commercial clubs draw up a resolution favoring the bill and send a copy to eacle and every senator and representative in the state legislature if the people of dixie view the mitter in the same light that we do tint it would be of immeasurable benefit to the state at large where kane or diute piute county has the same sli owing as salt lake or weber county they should write their senator and representative asking them to support the bill and if the people believe this would be a good diw they should get to work dimmed lately for its success for there is no time to spare many thousands of people will piss through utah to the panama expositions they will bo of all classes many of them men of large means and a great number of them will break the journey at salt like and ogden we should interest these people show them that utah is a great rich state rich in agriculture horticulture minerals scenery and everything ele that goes to make life woith living under the best possible conditions help to insure the passing of the bill that will make it to interest people |
