Show HOW TO BUILD A SILO should be lined with cement mortar when of lumber concrete foundation extending six feet into ground may be made with placed on top outside L t exposed in reply to a farmer asking for plans for a silo and who has on hand pine white oak and chestnut lumber tor its construction hoard s dairyman the following reply it Is our opinion that it it is most desirable to build a silo of the lum ber on hand it would be well to plan on lining it with cement mortar A concrete foundation extending six feet into the ground and two feet above 4 1 i y cc 1 i fi i tc r n w end view this illustration chows the half inch board which Is nailed to the and they may be any width the beveled baths laths and how the cement la put over them may be mae then place on the top of this foundation 24 s fifteen inches apart from center to center on the inside of the 24 s nail half inch lum ber horizontally to them over this ehe eting nail beveled baths laths which may be made from half inch lumber obtained at a saw mill the accompanying illustration shows the relation of the sheeting baths laths and cement mortar the dovetailed open ing formed by the baths laths as shown holds the cement lining very solidly the cement mortar should be mixed one part cement to three parts of charp sand it will be necessary t put on two coats the second coat Is put on before the first la thoroughly dry after the second coat Is dry or nearly a wash consisting of pure cement and water made to the thick ness of cream should be applied with a brush to the silo this wash will close up the pores of the plaster and prevent it from taking up any mols ture from the silage also prevent air from entering the silo the outside of the silo or the 24 may be left exposed or they may be covered with siding or sheeting a s the fancy of the builder decides it would be possible to use paper and several of lumber and make a very good silo setting up the 24 s as described but we believe it Is better and fully as cheap to line the silo with cement plaster |
