Show THE PAST YEAR we speak of the year fist draw ins to a close as the past year and ask our readers to tarry with while we to that on the whole it has been kind year to us it is it a time like this when G sit down and calmly reflect the beir passing in review before us that wo can see fully to what extent the year just closing his w we hao been blest in health and strength the most of us to a degree that must burely make us feel thankful we hac enjoyed an immunity from and famine earthquake and other eo destructive such as hae visited many other parts of the world bringing desolation to the land and sorrow to the home here in our favored dixie land we hao heard and read of these great calamities while wo have bien enjoying to the full a climate an abunda nto of the products of a rich and kind soil and all the blessings of peace and plenty much material progress pro grebS lias been made in Dixie 5 during the past sear foremost in the progress stands that monument to a progressive gres sive citizenship the st george stake academy the people of dixie hae donations 0 o nearly completed thi splendid building that pupils are now tuition within its walls under a most capable corps of instructors tors it is a magnificent building beautiful in appearance solid and substantially built and lias cost about 00 it will stand for generations as a monument to alie progressive spirit of the people who so loyally gae means and labor towards it erection next in line of must be ranked alie st george and banta clara bench irrigation project which while not et cry far ad danced was started during the past cir and will open up for settlement a v ery able portion of didies Dix ies fertile land tins is not a very big ini gUion project about acres ui land only being involved ct it means much to dixie because it is alie first of several proposed irrigation schemes to an aspect of assured completion within a reasonably short time and it is alao the first irrigation project in dixie to deal with the bencha bench 1 or high lying lands other marks of progress arc many consisting chiefly in greater care along horticultural lines and connections therewith many thousands of new fruit trees of superior quality li been planted and quite a demand has been created fot dixie seedless raisins when properly cliance and attractively packed in cartons the past year his alao witnessed a great demand for dixie molasses the superior quality of which product is becoming recognized ill over this state ind in portions of adjoining states other evidences of pro gres made during the vear are noticeable in parts of the county particularly ticul arly it hurricane enterprise and central many new homes hie been made in these settlements and much new land lias been brought under cultivation at the two last named settlements st george has made an addition to its substantial buildings by a fine amii bement hall erected by the bt george amuse ment co at a cost of and shied the st george electric theater motion picture entertainments are given in this hall every evening sundays of much importance to dixie is alie decision of the state highway commission to employ the state convicts on the state highway in dixie during the present winter ere this appears in print it is probable that work will have commenced the intention is we understand der stand to employ 20 men and 15 teams with proper grading outfit on that portion of the state road between middleton and bellevue during the rest of the winter this should result in a greatly improved condition of a very bad piece of road and help to make dixie more attractive to who travel the road either on business or pleasure although apparently of little importance an awakening has occurred among mining men regarding the dixie country and with the renewed prospecting activity some developments of importance may be looked for during the coming a alie of the past year found an optimistic feeling prevalent among the people that some definite action would be taken during the acar toward railroad building by some it was believed the denver and rio grande would build others atit certain the salt lake route would do the building w hilo a number believed implicitly that tile utah and grand canavon railroad co a company formed for the purpose would build the much desired railroad the latter company did put a force of surveyors at work who surveyed a line from lund on the salt lake route to bt george and also did some grading north of the iron county line since which the company and alie proposed line seem to have completely out of sight and nothing further has been done however that does not necessarily mean that dixie is not to have a railroad it 13 our firm conviction that dixie is now retting a railroad thin it cair was everything in tins line is very quiet now but thia very quietness may much activity in the acir future a dolcino 13 usually most quiet ut before an eruption the future who cin till nhat it contains none of to a it is all hidden from us still past progress and the tendency of the times make us view didies Dix ies future through optimistic glasses vie cannot eee anything but goodan store for this fair land railways irrigation projects capital industrious home seekers good roads good markets good cery thing all are coming if e but believe they aro and show our belief by our works |
