Show WESLEY KINGS JOURNEY makes long trip through southern utah and gives his impressions of the places visited at an altitude of feet we me crossed the divide an hour after pissing passing the Hatch down dosin dam and reservoir and begin began our decent into ind and upon one of the most wonderful scenic portions of america a territory that will some day attract the attention of the world and one which sightseers will travel from the he four parts of the compass to view I 1 do not believe there is anything on tho the globe like the canyon of the tile aitio virgin or to compare with the tile vermillion Yer million cliffs those majestic sentinels standing glaid over our southern border and stretching in a military line a distance of miles from the paha river on the eist east to the bridak of the hurricane ledge on oil the most we spent the night it Mc mcdonalds ranch at the headwaters of the virgin but to reach the wonderful cannon less im than one hundred miles to the southwest we me were more obliged to traverse the length of long valley 11 over roads that scarcely deserve tho the name and flounder through miles of sand waste and desert that tired our souls and horses to siy say nothing of fixing taxing the strength of our mountain buggy to its utmost our admiration for the people of this region was ato aroused used the fortitude they have displayed in n settling it and staving there is worthy of a sure reward renard they can only market such products product a aa as can be driven across the mountains while the of goods southwards presents obstacles that would biffle tho the stoutest hearts here and over in dixie land to the westward the people live a simple healthy life unspoiled by the world and its vagaries children of the soil of ot one filth faith and with inith a singleness of purpose rarely did we find a magazine or other periodical with onla here liere and there a semiweekly semi weekly silt salt lake paper at kanab two miles from the arizona line we took tool a it guide and picked our way may carefully over the desert which separates the region of the grand canyon from tho the vermillion cliffs that end in the towers and temples of the virgin would thit that vve ise hid had taken a guide before attempting to cro cross that terrible stretch of sand that separates kanab from the world to the north there are no roads across it today no mitter matter what there might have been yesterday the county commissioners of garfield and kane counties have spent abou of dollars in road building but never a cent for signboards sign boards in all their domain hence wo me lost our way may and our tempers getting over tho the divide into long valley and again on this sahira sall ira bordering on kanab A lone sheep herder berder saved based us on the second morning out and we floundered into over twenty four hours late just as uncle D 11 wooley was mas starting a posse of indian scouts after us fortunately w me e had bad paold pa eld some blankets into the steamer trunk and had stocked the commisa commissary ary well with plenty of sago brush for fire and a good stout water big bag filled at the spring before leaving lit aft carmel wo me mere able to mike make t ourselves fairly comfortable physically the two wo day s and a night tile mental jar ir may stay IN ith us for a time I 1 ref refuse use to excuse or forgive give those commis boners and I 1 think they deserve a good scolding G airfield wayno wayne and kine counties arc are only sparsely spar bely settled and until permanent roads are constructed into them they will mill so remain only here and there does the traveler finds spots that has e been cultivated where springs of water have base been led out of the mountain side sides there is small incentive to attempt dref firming arming for the markets cannot be fetched reached the principal industries mav mal be said to be cattle and sheep raising and some of the best ranges of what has been called the last frontier lie batu between con the divide and the colondo colorado coal and other metals are found in some portions of these counties but the local deu demand mand if so limited that little development hia has been attempted A railroad or a line of commercial airships arc y f would mould help some the one seem seems as early a possibility as the other notwithstanding the tile wonderful tour territory that mauld be kopenec opened to the NN world orld wo we were treated to somo some nen nev sensations in our three da days s drive from to the virgin virgins but we un felt perfectly safi with our guide ahead and the m cliffs tc to the right it seemed as though we no ft note ere passing in review at their feel feet while the sunshine and the shadows on their towering toNi cring sides kept us in a state of constant wonderment and awe ane we spent our second night out aiom kanab in the shelter of one of these giant guards which towered 2000 feet above us now non glowing in the rays rans of the setting sun now bomber and forbidding in the shades of night A deserted ranch house with a sheltered spring us to rest and refresh ourselves for the third days dais ride was to be sadly badly spoiled by the tile disappearance of our pack horses they were recovered ten milca miles on oil their homeward way by our guide who returned to his anxious charges just before midday meantime our own driving team had given us a it further fright by breaking out of their pasture and straying into the recesses of the canyon in the rear of our habitat near short creek we ne saw sais the initial work of what hat will probably piave to be the most stupendous irrigation project attempted in amei ica the impounding of the waters of the virgin and conducting them through twelve miles of tunnel to be spread out over the millions of acres of land lying beyond the cliffs cliff now trackless desert waste this project will turn the famous cattle range which has its center at pipe springs far famed in the earb history ol 01 utah and northern arizona into a garden of fertility liti but the cattle arc are not moving off vet 1 et that tunnel has hag not been bored and the lion non rails of steam transportation have base not been laid to its border we should give pipe springs a word as we ne pass famous as it is in connection with the years of struggle with maia bands of bad indiana indians it was there that dr whitmore and his party were so foully murdered and where persecuted fugitives from the north found fou n d shelter shen within its fortress mal walls I 1 Q in strange contrast to its gene general ra I 1 appearance pe arance and surroundings a w gestern telegraph sign trot protrudes rudes boldly into the sunlight but the telegraph keys kei s base long since been silent from the crest of the hurricane ledge we me circled down doin into rockville a descent of 2000 feet before making the dron and crossing the virgin for the first score of times made necessary in a visit to its canyons we hesitated for a while in an effort to comprehend the grandeur of the great temple I 1 surrounded by its scores of lesser temples and towers brilliant in the glow of the setting sun I 1 shall make male no effort to describe the x w ond ondrous tons procession of gorgeous rocks roas of cathedrals and their towering or spires of temples tein plea palisades and ramparts ram Darts which wo ne reviewed in bewildering succession as ve e bourne journeyed ed up the tile stream for a realistic description eption I 1 must refer 5 vou ou to captain C E button dutton and his tertiary history of the grand canyon district and to the writings of P F S dellen baubli of the famous captain powell party like the traveler to the bottom of the grand canyon vie sic returned dd to our sleeping place on the following follo ing night after ten hours astride a mountain poev filled with tenderness and awe aue but the and the awe were not in the same battle place we found the tile deap canyon canion impassable im so we spent tho the day in the dark lark of the speechless with ith wonderment sion derment except for an occasional awe or an absolutely marvelous 11 this panorama had a deeper a more wonderful ond erful effect upon us than anything our eyes had bad ever bpi beheld beld on oil the second day after leaving leal ing the canyon we me apachi d st george and rave gave ourselves up to a day lay of cleaning it was marvelous how much dirt ono ona can soak up tip in a journey journe of this kind hind too many fluent pen men have preceded us into dixie for me tile to attempt to tell here anything about it I 1 think its praises have han e already been sung too loudly it has much to offer to the home li hunter but the people already there do not want any new settlers and there is 13 little to offer the intrepid future citizen of the valley who goes in unbidden dry farming is when lien tried has proved a success and the boil when watered will grow almost anything from cotton to barles but the roads to market put their output beyond hope an apple would be jam and corn would b bs 1 juice by the time they reached the rails washington and iron counties hai have e great n natural resources and possibilities NN which aich 1 will ill bloom into realties realities real ties only when the transportation problem has been solved each county can do little by itself in road building it iq is a state problem and must be worked out by our state officials oni rials backed up and encouraged bv bs all the people through tho the utah development league but this n work ork must be done regardless gard less of the wishes and ind without the help of the present sturdy inhabitants of that region from st george to the divide little g has been made in forty years nears the road is flanked its entire distance with nith deserted houses and village villages evidences of a hopeless struggle the childrers child childr reri ert gro grow up and go away no one returns to take their places broad acres arc are allowed to relapse into their virgin state and a country unexcelled for climate blessed with a bottomless soil and the purest of mountain water we found it replete with contradictions we 1170 often found bathtubs but no carpets herds of cattle and sheep but no meat to eat cat splendid churches and temples but no sidewalks modern delss dr sa and manners but no magazines or newspapers busy and patrons but no money in cincu cedar city was the one bright spot after leaving st george only at cedar did we me find a people willing to permit their brethren from rom abroad to settle among them and help in the great task of build an empire south of the divide an ali alarmingly bick horse detained us a day at Paro carowan parowan Pa rowan nano then we climbed back over the mountain range slid pait past the beautiful upper and ind lower lon er bear valleys alloys and dropped again into panguitch valley forti miles mile from the rails on the evening of the eighteenth day we me ended our mile buggy ride and took the tram train from marys vale for home we are proud of our trip and proud of that part of our state which it opened up tip to us we here register tho the hope that the potters that be will make future ingres in that region less of a trial and less distressing by the construction of passable highways or at it least by the erection of guide pots posts for tho the salvation of the traveler |
