Show WE WISH HIM HAPPINESS acroy armstrong who has adit edthe republican and herald re publican of salt lake city for the past four years lias severed his connection with that paper he was married on march at portland oregon to mrs mane S adams of hood river oregon who is reported to be quite wealthy and will rc sido in thit section of the country the heartily wishes him and his ande all happiness we feel sure this wish for happiness will be echoed in many dixie hearts for mr armstrong has on every possible occasion had good words to say of dixie he took more interest in the rural districts of utah than is usually talen by the editors of the big city papers and dixie especially camo in for a large share of his favorable comment this was no doubt due to his acquaintance with dixie and some of the people here in the early part of april 1909 he and ins charming daughter miss ruth spent several days in this city together they visited the NEWS office on our first press day in april and helped the editor with the imbue of eliat date mr armstrong is an all round newspaper man and his experiences perien ces have not all been in the big offices ho is familiar with the country print shop and his daughter is alao familiar with the country office while in dixie mr armstrong saw sufficient of her wonderful but mostly idle resources to convince him that here was a veritable empire that only needed to bo known at its true value and leave suitable transportation facilities to leap into prominence and attract capital and homo builders in abundance and once convinced of this fact he made use of every possible occasion to give dixie a boost and help her get the bilings she so much needs we do not forget taco many kind offerings on behalf of dixie and we say more to mr armstrong and his ando all happiness his parting words to ins utah frends are contained in a signed editorial in the herald republican of the ard 3rd dinst they are characteristic te of the man and we pant the following portion of it and it is not going to be easy for me to vacate this editorial chair which I 1 hao tried to fill for the past four ye arsand more without chatting a little in all of churbe courbe my people one cannot address them every morning for fifteen hundred days without getting interested in problems to and desirous of esteem maybe thia is going to bo a shade intimate and bear with me if you find it so I 1 call you to witness I 1 have never projected my personality in thebe calums never boasted defended never allowed myself to be made an issue and only in this f the last page over which I 1 shall preside will personal mention be made tina is my last day in alio four 5 ears I 1 have formed flomo ery warm friendships lavo s jus come to know some men whose memories will go with me to the end winch cant be many years but which will be made the bight cv of having known these utah people they li ive been pretty savagely attacked one time and another but four years of dealing with them daily conferring arguing often disputing as to details I 1 find them four square to every wind that blows 1 I doubt if any editor anywhere has ever had a more free hand than they have given me at alic beginning they laid down the one rule that this haq to bo a republican paper that was all and it certainly lias been without variableness or shadow of turning in church matters the topic of much discussion in utah we also were wholly agreed mormon jew and gentile were sure of fair treatment neither moro nor less the paper has referred to as a mormon paper I 1 remember one time at the elks club chatting with a gentleman who was trying to smooth over a rather salty newspaper attack he said of course mr armstrong every one connected with a mormon paper must expect to be attacked in salt lake 1 I said do you think the republican is a mormon paper why if it anti mormon it is mormon he replied not unkindly but as one might state a result of multiplication it was that evident and established in his mind and that 13 just the point I 1 want to dwell on for a moment for alie first six months of my residence here I 1 carefully kept out of all controversies trover sies just wrote republican and utah editorials just worked for the party and for the state in that time I 1 studied the situation now and then in private conversation some man would meet my argument with the petulant exclamation oh you dont know the situation wait till you hae been here a year or two well at the end of four years in which I 1 have written absolutely every editorial in every issue of the paper excepting on the occasion of my annual vacations and two other brief absences from the city I 1 belies 0 that the original position of equal rights to all churchmen and special bussing cussing for none was the only course that in gods justice could have been chosen and not once in these four years lias the republican or the herald republican printed one line which can warrant the assertion that this is a mormon paper it could as properly bo called a catholic paper or a methodist or a congregational or a paper tor it has given commendation a times to all of them and they have deserved it oh mv frienda for working with you four years has made you my friends this utah needs nothing BO much as tolerance hero lies the making of an empire under alie shining sun is there a region where every metal from iron to amethyst is found in alie earth Is there a soil bince edens rates were w A closed eo generous and rich with vegetation comes to any land such blessed balmy airs such airy angels with healing on their flings believe me w here every prospect pleases man 13 not vile dont quarrel tho newspaper man knows nothing but his paper to that he is loyal with every palpitation of his heart and as I 1 leave the chair it is a comfort to know I 1 given the very best I 1 had for four busy years and that I 1 cannot remember any hour when I 1 would not have given more if I 1 could and it is a oy a heartfelt joy to know the piper I 1 have served has won thit it is firmly established on a paying asis with the biggest and best subscription list with the biggest advertising ver patronage and with a constantly increasing army of utah men who believe that fairness is best and that the states highest level must bo won in peace |
