Show WALKING TEST BECOMES FAD cagl stunt of fifty miles in three daya Is increased to forty in one day washington the walking test has come to be a fad with a number ot army officers especially those in the coast artillery corps several of the officers who are required by the roosevelt order to walk 50 miles in three days have walked 30 to 40 miles in one day some ot them now and then valk out to chevy chase afternoons for a game of golf while others take an occasional sunday morning walk out to cabin john bridge beyond the district line tor breakfast others have walked outi to great falls tor breakfast and then walked in ing in town shortly after noon among the most ardent pedestrians are col charles J bailey act ing chief of artillery and capt P P bishop target practice observer the latest exploit of these officers was a tramp to baltimore covered with three inches of dust and with a sun of 90 degrees above their heads they ar rived at carroll park at one the other afternoon on the last lap of their walk from washington to balta more they covered the distance in eight hours and 15 minutes at the rate of 3 miles on hour the two officers left the district line at 2 30 on a recent saturday aft and sped toward laurel they hove into sight at laurel at 6 30 and spent the night there they left lau rel promptly at 7 30 and sailed into carroll park at one 0 clock with a halt mile trail of dust behind them they were not arrested for exceeding the speed limit the estimated distance to laurel by the route over which the two officers traveled Is about twenty miles and from laurel to baltimore it is about twenty five miles col bailey and capt bishop were on duty at the war department the next morning apparently none the worse for wear it was a bully walk said the former and we enjoyed every inch of it |
