Show GRAND SCHEME biggest irrigation project in utah about to be undertaken in sunny dixie land richfield reaper some time ago the reaper told of a asit of J M Launtz cn down into the dixie country in quest of land and water and any kotlier proposition that looked v orthy to him at that time he investigated certain land deals that looked good and even went to the extent of securing a good tract of land this was considered enterprising on the part of mr Laun and his associates people here H ere glad to know that the gentlemen associated socia ted together all citizens of richfield had launched out m a scheme of securing land for colonization it turns out that mr quest for land embraces the most gigantic reclamation ever thought of in utah instead of a few hundreds of acres of jand first mentioned there are at least acres of the choicest land in sunny south of utah bounded on the cast by the kane county line on the north and west by the virgin nver and extending ocr into arizona lies a tract of land that has always been considered beyond the power of the civilizing agencies of irrigation on this broad stretch of land mr Launtz cn has planned to place the life giving waters of the upper branches of the virgin nver riding in easy stages from the st george basin arc stretches of tho most inviting land that the eye of man ever beheld truo at the pros ent stage it 13 not inviting but n ith I 1 the promise of water upon this land the ce of the speculator can fruitful fields and orchards nse as if by magic land that is not worth the trouble of entering upon at pros ent promises to become the greatest t a fruit belt in america the f bili ties are simply wonderful sir Launtz cn has spent considerable time in dixie the past summer he observed this almost limitless area of land and straightway his mind sought for a means of reclaim 3 ing it he wandered along the virgin river he traversed the country from whence came the aion creek he saw that the nver cut deep into the earth and became practically lost in its efforts to reach alie calo T rado there were three small towns on its binks but the entire area of land covered by the virgin nver does not exceed three or four t and acres is an abundance of water y if properly stored to supply ands upon thousands of acres of land the thing was to find alie place w hero the waters of the virgin could be taken on the large tract of land there is a high range of mountains to the north of the tract of land vis A which mr Laun dreamed could w be reclaimed by the application of water following tho route to tho s south and above the junction of the jl zion creek and the virgin nver mr Laun conceived a scheme of ya conducting the waters through a grand scheme continued from first pane aanal 20 miles long and ocr an al most inaccessible bouto and piercing the mountains with a tunnel a mile long alio water could lie safely brought to the thirsty land this 13 the scheme proposed there will be storage reservoirs to be constructed and there will be prior water eghte to be respected but it all rises alio vision of the reclamation of oer acres of choice land the scheme will cost about but the land to bo reclaim ed will be worth many times that when the water and land arc brought together after satisfying himself of the feasibility of the scheme sir laur itzin returned to aalt lake and acquainted quain ted his associates with the details of his travels and the conclusions lie had drawn he hid maps and plats of the country showing the location of the land and the of alie proposed water supply his associates into the scheme and before long applications for tho uso of the water and the storage rights were filed in the proper offices applications were made for 1000 second feet of water and also applications for acre feet of water the fees on these applications amounted to 1500 so that the preliminary expenses have been paid it was seen by mr Laun that eastern capital would bo necessary for the completion of this gi gintic undertaking the proper sources were followed and the men with capital were secured not only is there money guaranteed to complete the project but also to build a railroad if necessary for thea promoters to secure a complete suncy of all lands canals and all other necessary information plata and maps will be necessary this small sum is being raised by the promoters selling fractional shares in the scheme for paid in astall manta an interest in the proposition is given and an assurance of a return of the money within six months or an interest in the concern which will be worth many times over what the original cost is it is proposed to have the land set apart under the carey land act by alio state and it will then bo sold to settlers at 50 cents per acre alie water will be sold for the land at a rate to be agreed upon after the completion of alie scheme in addition to the reclamation scheme there is possible water power which theoretical hoi be power for electrical purposes this is made turning of alie water into a canal at alio point on tho big tract of land and over feet of licad can boob tamed alie possibilities of this immense power can bo conceived at once there is little for that amount of power at present but when the country Is settled there will be a demand for electrical equipment which will justify alie securing of this excellent power site the water after dc eloping power will continue on and be used for irrigation purposes the power site is at a point where alie water lias to make a descent to reach another plate lu lower alian the one on which alie canal originally conducts the water |
