Show MAKING BARN SANITARY good light pure air and general cleanliness essential dairy experts agree that the essen of a good dairy barn are plenty of light pure air and as little filth as possible there are but few barns that cannot be transformed into rea sanitary stables at moderate expense it la not difficult to put in extra windows and every stable for dairy cows should have windows that will admit direct sunlight on bright days and a least one xa foot elmow should be put in for each two stalls the frame must alt tight so as to secure protection during cold weather arrangements should be made for opening these for ventilation make walls tight by putting in an inside wall of thin lumber it necessary filling the space between with cut straw or sawdust good ventilation can be secured in several ways it the stable Is low and without extensive wall a ven flue on the king system open stable floor of wood ing near the floor with an outlet near the gable of the barn will give plenty of change of air A flue two feet square will change the air for 20 cows the inlets should be near the belling of the stable in well exposed stables muslin cur bains at the windows may be used saya farm and home one half of the windows of the stable being replaced with light frames covered with thin muslin experienced dairymen who have used this system give two aquaro feet of curtain per 1000 pounds of cow as best the change of air through these will keep the stable free from foul air while this Is a new schema it has been fairly successful to avoid undue filth in the stable a good floor la absolutely necessary cement and concrete are of course bi i sp T M t SWA stable floor of concrete ideal but wooden floors are fairly sat it well laid with proper slope the main trouble Is that they decay too quickly dulla them as shown in fig 1 with a slight slope of the stall and walk towards gutter do not put a board floor directly upon the ground but raise it sufficiently so that it will be dry underneath al though not exposed to the outside air or it will be cold good floors make the animals more comfortable save more of the valuable manure make it easier to clean the stable and make possible cleaner milk the best mix ture for a cement floor in six parts gravel or stone two parts sand and one part portland cement laid three inches thick on a firm basis of earth stone ashes or gravel which has been camped tamped solid as shown in fig 2 after you have a well lighted well ventilated and clean floored stable then you must practice cleaning it thoroughly every day and make some provision against dust plain old fashioned whitewash made of one halt bushel of lime slaked in boil ing water and applied with a spray pump Is the best covering tor walls if the walls are quite smooth a brush may be used but the spray Is more effective A bushel of lime should make SO gallons of whitewash some recipes tor whitewash involve the use of salt oil glue etc but these are too complicated for ordinary use A little salt may be added if bandy but frequent applications of plain whitewash are ventilation of stable it your stable la ventilated only from above you are drawing off the warm air which means loss to the cows in comfort and loss of the pur eat air foul air must be drawn off on a level with the stable floor tor bad air Is much heavier than good air when the cows lie down and the gentl Is poor they breathe foul air it has its effect on the cows as well as on the product solder the palls milk palls with rags drawn in through holes in the bottom are a miserable nuisance you can get a lit tie kit of soldering tools ery cheap and it Is not much of a trick to learn how to use it scrape away the metal around the hole drop a bit of resin aver the place or a little sulphuric acid and then go ahead with your solder make a nice smooth job of it A cow shed hive you an open shed facing the sunshine for your cows to run under n the warm part of the day it not t it be a good plan to build one is soon as you can the stock will ake lots of comfort in it rainy weather has made the yards auddy during mild days and horridly j ough and frozen plenty of room un ler a tight root is appreciated now on |
