Show Joseph Sylvester Feted On 82nd Birthday Event PINTURA, Utah. Reaching his 82nd milestone today (Thursday) is Joseph Sylvester of Pintura, whose nearby children and grandchildren grand-children honored him with a pre-anniversary pre-anniversary dinner and social at nis home Sunday, Sept. 5th, relatives rela-tives from St. George, Toquer-ville, Toquer-ville, LaVerkin and Hurricane attending. at-tending. Born In 1861 Born in Springville, Utah, Sept. 9, 1861 shortly after his parents, James and Rebecca Ann Nickle-son Nickle-son Sylvester, who were early English converts, arrived at that place, he grew up during the hard years of pioneering. He was just a small boy when the family moved to Gunnison, and well remembers re-members some of the early Indian In-dian troubles and later how he used to go swimming in the Gunnison Gun-nison river with the small Indian In-dian boys. A few years later the family moved to the southern mission, settling at what was then named Bellview, and is now known as Pintura. He was still in his early teens and recalls many harrowing harrow-ing experiences. The only time he remembers . seeing Brigham Young, was at the approach of winter one year. He was driving a bunch of cattle towards Kan-arra Kan-arra horseback. Just on the I Black Ridge he met President Young and his caravan moving to Dixie for the winter. President Young inquired where he was going go-ing and when he said to Kan-arra, Kan-arra, advised the boy to turn back and avoid the blizzard that was coming. He' did so, and feels his life was thus spared as that ; t ii. - ia o uu miuwn as one oi uie worst blizzards in southern Utah history, and he could hardly have survived. He was just a young man in the boom days of Silver Reef and worked with his brother-in-law, Andrew Gregerson, on the big wood cutting and hauling contracts. con-tracts. He held a top-notch record rec-ord for a wood chopper and was always full of pranks. Married At Par o wan, 1882 On Jan. 17, 1882 he . was married mar-ried in Parowan to Jane Allie Hanks. After Silver Reef slowed down he and his wife moved to Hanksville in Wayne county, which had- been settled by and named for her father. After a few years they returned to their old home where they became established. es-tablished. He always drove good horses and during the later 1890's and until 1904 he had the mail hauling contract between Cedar City and St. George, living part of the time in St. George, where his wife died in 1903. A few years later he married Mrs. Emmaline Stewart of Washington, Wash-ington, who died a few months ago. His five children by his first marriage and two by his second marriage are still living. They are Frank Sylvester of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Vinnie Leeds of Los Angeles; , Mrs. A. W. Gregerson, Greg-erson, St. George; Victor D. Sylvester, Syl-vester, Hurricane; Mrs. Andrew Olds, Toquerville; LaVell Sylvester Syl-vester of Pintura; and Mrs. Robert Rob-ert Munford of ; Cedar City. He also has 67 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. |
