Show IftfHV YOU SHOULD BUY CHRISTMAS SEALS We are reminded by the Utah Public Pub-lic Health Association that the season sea-son is here for the annual sale of Christmas Seals, those modest little mess-engers of mercy which do so much to relieve pain and administer comfort wherever necessary. As heretofore the sale opens on Thanksgiving Thanks-giving day and continues until all have been given an opportunity to invest. in-vest. This word "invest" is used with a full appreciation of all it signifies, signi-fies, for the returns in health from the money spent in their purchase cannot be computed in dollars and cents, although they are more valuable valu-able than gold to the individual and to the community. The Public Health Association is affiliated with the National Tuberculosis Tubercul-osis Association and devotes much of its time and the greater part of its funds to fighting the advance of the much dreaded white plague. The importance of this fight is to be called cal-led to the attention of the people of Utah Sunday, November 29th, when church officials generally will he asked to give the matter of combatting combat-ting tuberculosis some attention in their various services. While Utah probably is about as free from this disease as any state in the Union, a survey by the traveling clinic some time ago revealed 7 56 cases among adults out of a total of 2.S5S persons examined. These persons voluntarily presented themselves for examination. examina-tion. It is safe to conclude, therefore, there-fore, that many others, shrinking from the thoughts of such an affliction, afflic-tion, purposely declined to submit to examination although their failure to do so may probably deprive them of much- needed assistance in fighting its ravages. Through enforcement of the laws of health and the emphasis placed upon health regulations in the public schools, tuberculosis is gradually being be-ing conquered in the United States. But there is much work yet to be done and this work devolves largely upon the health organizations established estab-lished in the various stales. The P.ublic Health Association is self-sup porting, that is, it depends upon public pub-lic subscriptions through the sale of seals and otherwise to finance the work it is called upon to perform. Public funds in the shape of taxes are not devoted to this purpose and under the regulations of the National Tuberculosis Tub-erculosis Association, all moneys received re-ceived from the sale, of stamps must be spent in no other way flian in the work of preventing tuberculosis. In view of these facts and the great field there is for helpful work along the lines here indicated, it is hoped that the response to the call for the purchase of Christinas seals will be most generous in order that none who need assistance in this direction will be neglected for lack of funds. - - I leseret News. |
