Finch, president pres-ident and secretary-treasurer oe. the Finch-Rogers company, was chosen to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Dr. M. R. Stewart, commissioner commis-sioner of parks and public property. by the city commission. The appointment appoint-ment was made after twelve ballots. Salt Lake Salt Lake county and Granite school districts agreed to proceed pro-ceed no further with its appeal from a decision of Judge Tillmar D. Johnson in the United States district court to the effect that the county and other taxing units had no right to assess tailings in the tailing pond of the Utah Copper company. The case nas reached the United States supreme court, which denied a writ of certiorari certi-orari filed by the county last December. Decem-ber. Improvement of telephone tele-phone properties in the intennountatn region in the next five years involve an expenditure of $27,000,000 by the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Tele-graph company, it was announced by the local office, following advices received re-ceived from Denver. Direct telephone communication between Utah and western Colorado will be afforded by construction work scheduled for 192G and large expenditures will be made as required in Salt Lake and Ogden during the five-year period. Salt Lake. I. J. Arnistrong, present pres-ent assistant football coach and ireshman basketball and track coach at- the University . of Drake, Des Moines, Iowa, was named football coach and athletic director at the University of Utah. He was recommended recom-mended by Dr. George Thomas, pres. ident of the university, and the recommendation rec-ommendation was approved without dissent by the board of regents. Armstrong Arm-strong will succeed the present coach, T. M. Fitzpatrick, who has been in charge of the Crimson athletics since 1916 and who tendered his resignation resigna-tion to the president last spring. Salt Lake. An executive order signed by President Coolidge was received re-ceived by the local United States land office, directing that the land office at Vernal be discontinued and the business and archives be transferred trans-ferred to the Salt Lake office. The local office will take over the worn February 28, according to the order. Ogden. Appointment of Lieutenant Lieuten-ant Russel L. Maughan of Logan who" won fame by his dawn to dusk flight across the continent, to suc ceed first Lieutenant H. H.
