Show ARIZ. REPUBLICAN COMMENDS WORK OF MOORE AND MAllONEY The Arizona Republican, published at Phoenix, speaks editorially in Its issue of April 5 of law enforcement in Mohave and Maricopa counties, Arizona, Ariz-ona, as follows: "Regardless of the attitude of higher officials in the state toward the prohibition law, H is being enforced en-forced by Johnnie. Moore, the sheriff of Maricopa county, and Bill Mahoney of Mohave county, and will be enforced enforc-ed by them. We suppose there are other sheriffs in Arizona whp have, a regard for their oaths of office, but these two have been conspicuous in the discharge of their duties. "Mr. Moore litis been In office for only three months, hut in that tune , he has given a pleasing earnest of what he will do. Mr. Mahoney, who has been continuously sheriff of Mohave Mo-have county, has been enforcing prohibition pro-hibition ever since wo had a prohibition prohibi-tion law in Arizona ten yearn. lb' was making bootleggers hard to catch in that part of the slate long befon' national prohibition and before national na-tional prohibition was thought to be xissible. "Since the enactment of the federal law he bail been none the less active, but has at till times cooperated with the federal officers working In that county, and when they were not there, he has busied hinmclf In bunting bunt-ing down violators of the state law -all of which amounts to the same thing prohibition enforcement. "It h. through tin- energetic work of such local officers that prohibition must prevail ami will prevail. Then-can Then-can never be enough federal officer to retain the, lawless In till patts of this gnat country. The expense of maintaining such a lone would b" greater than even the t'nitetl States can afford. This part of enforcement enforce-ment must develop upon officers who will regard the prevention of every violation of the law- as a part of lh"-day lh"-day s work which they ate i.woin to pet foi m and for tlo- performance of I which their salaries are paid." |
