Tmd Thanksgiving Day; kept as a thanksgiving thanks-giving for the mercies of the year, on the last Thursday of November; is actually ac-tually a harvest thanksgiving, and owes its origin to the Pilgrim Fathers, who first set apart a day in America for that purpose at Plymouth (1621); since 1863 the present date has been adopted throughout the United States. According to the Washington Starr, previous to the start of the Pilgrims from Leyden, Holland, on their trip to America, Amer-ica, a solemn day of fasting was decreed, the day before leaving, the 21st day of July, 1620. After the landing in Plymouth, Ply-mouth, the Colonists experienced great hardships and as a means of evidencing their reliance on Almighty God a solemn day of fasting was proclaimed for Wednesday, Wed-nesday, the 16th day of July, 1623. 'On this day no food was partaken of from sunrise to sunset, -but the entire day was spent in religious observance and prayer. So it may be seen that our T,ii, forefathers ' not only had their day of giving thanks through feasting but also through fasting. Of late years most of us celebrate the day Dy feasting and merry-making. Bu L'ximes such as we have had th, Pt. ew years we have come to again appre-- appre-- .
