Show VETERAN AT 80 ASCRIBES , HEALTH TO PROPER LIVING The following appeared in the Des-eret Des-eret News two years ago. Mr. Lively, Live-ly, to whom it refers is now living in St. George. In making local meution of him in last week's issue we error-oneously error-oneously gave his age at 82, it should have been 88. Mr. Lively is a worker work-er in the St. George temple and says he intends to spend the remainder of his days in Temple work. "I believe the Word of Wisdom to be one of the greatest blessings ever given to mankind. It is the perfect law of health and if observed will prove a boon to- suffering humanity." So spoke J. W. Lively, a resident of Salt Lake, who for the past 4 years has made his home at 225 Enieril avenue. Mr. Lively is 8 6 years of age and as spry as a youngster. He was born at Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co., New York, August 6, 1838, and insists that his present physical condition con-dition is due largely to his observance of the Word of Wisdom. Mr. Lively served during the Civil war with the Nineteenth U. S. Infantry In-fantry and was with Sherman in his famous march to the sea. He was a commissary sergeant and says he was the only man or officer in the regiment regi-ment who was allowed to ride a horse. He says he did the work of three men during the war because of his good habits. He came to Salt Lake from Douglas, Arizona, where members of his family now live. Here is his creed: He never swears. He has never used strong drink. He does not use tea or coffee. He eats simple food and takes plenty of exercise. He never eats meat. He has strong religious convictions. convic-tions. Mr. Lively contends that those who subscribe to these principles cannot help but be happy and live a long life. He says he came to Utah to do Temple work and this he and his good wife have been doing for the 4 years they have lived in Salt Lake. |
