Among the many fine articles the paper contained is the following follow-ing one by John Imlay on the possibilities of getting a new high school building. At the time the Public Works Administration came into existence, exist-ence, the iJoard of Education of Washington County District made application for $170,000 to be used for construction ot school buildings and repairs through out the school district. It was the intentions of the school board to construct either a twelve room elementary school building, or a high school building at Hurricane, Hurri-cane, a junior high to take care of the conjested condition at St. George, a two room building at Rockvllle, and a two room building build-ing at LaVerkin. This application applica-tion for a loan of $170,000 was approved by the local committee of the state, representing the P. W. A., and was forwarded to Washington, D. C, where it apparently ap-parently was approved In full by the legal division which declared that "no debt in excess of the taxes for the current year shall be created by any county, or subdivision sub-division thereof, or by any school district therein; unless the proposition pro-position to create such debt shall have been submitted to a vote of such qualified electorieg who shall have paid a property tax therein, in the year preceding such election and a majority of j those voting thereon shall have voted in favor of incurring such : debt. Whereas the additional ' i bonding capacity of the school ; I district is approximately $89,000. j The legal division approved of j this amount only. 30 per cent ' of the $127,142.66 is to be a grant of a contribution, leaving i $89,000 for repayment. The district may at its next j meeting provide for a bond election. elec-tion. If the qualified voters fav-! or incuring such a debt and if the i money is made available there j are no reasons why construction I work cannot begin within sixty I days. j |
