Show COUNTIES ADVISED J TO SAVE EXPENSE The state tax commission in a letter to various county assessors as-sessors has warned against blanket blan-ket reductions in assessed valuations valu-ations as a means of reducing the tax burden. "If the various local units of the government can operate their respective branches of the government gov-ernment in the manner in which the law requires with a reduction reduc-tion in expenditures, such a course should be taken," the letter reads. "In the final analysis, the only reduction in the present tax load of the state which can be effected this year must come through a reduction in expenditures. expendi-tures. If a county of school district dis-trict or a municipality can operate op-erate successfully during the current year with the same levies lev-ies which they had in operation last year, but with a reduction of 20 per cent in the assessed valuation of the property within such taxing units, then that taxing tax-ing unit can operate just as successfully with just as great a saving to the taxpayers through the maintenance of the present assessed valuation, but with a reduction of 20 per cent in the tax levies". |
