| Show Rep G Cooper Caper Airs Sales Tax Slate e Rep Glenn H Cooper The sales tax increase is before the House of Representatives Representatives It was debated on the floor of the House for two hours Saturday and tabled for further consideration next Wednesday TIle The th increase would put the tax collection at 3 in Uintah County THERE IS NO doubt in my mind that due to all the pres- pres pressures pressures needed for additional revenue re for schools welfare state buildings etc It i is of necessity to make a choice of added tax revenue from some source It could be on property tax tobacco tax bottle drinks tax income tax or by sales tax It is my feeling at this time the fairest tax of all is the sales tax but it must be just justi fled to all who pay One de- de definite de- de definite finite consideration that will willbe willbe be made is to adjust the sales tax on consumers who are In merchandise as appliances cars and guns who should be allowed a de- de deduction deduction of the sales tax on the amount they are allowed on on the trade in in FOR INSTANCE today if one purchases a new automo- automo automobile automobile bile he must pay the full sales tax on a car even though his trade trade-in value was for at least half the price of the new car To me this Is double taxa- taxa taxation taxation tion and the consumer should be allowed the advantage and pay the tax onlY on the differ differ- difference difference ence of the price of the parti particular cular item he purchased |
