Uintah Utes climaxed a not too exciting game Friday with the Tabiona Tigers In Inthe inthe the Ute gym Due to the efforts of Josie Tabiona was able to pull ahead 88 8 In the early few minutes of the game but from then on the Utes dominated the play and pulled steadily ahead to a wide margin victory The Tigers would have done a little bet bet- better better ter if they had been able to take greater advantage of their free throws At the end end of the first quarter th the Utes were only two points ahead at 1210 12 but at the end of the second they had gained 32 to the visitors visitor's 16 and there was no doubt as to the final Ute victory Action in the third quarter was slow generally speaking although Lyman made three field goals consecutively and fast In the early part Score stood SEVIER BY AFTER STRUGGLE FRIDAY nUDA Y After getting perhaps more competition competition tion than from any other team this season the Utes finally forged ahead to beat the North Sevier Wolves by 54 44 at a practice game In Uintah High School gym Friday Out of the 54 points scored by the Utes Eaton tallied 36 with 13 field goals and ten out of 17 free throws During the first two minutes of the game Cutshaw fouled twice Later the lost several opportunities to score by waiting too long at the basket for sure sure- shots and at the end of the first quarter the Wolves were leading by 1510 15 During the second quarter the Wolves were leading by 2310 23 when Eaton started to spark He made eight field goals and four for four free throws and after some hard battling between the two teams the second quarter ended with the Utes on the better end of a 2827 28 score Highlighting the third quarter were two baskets by Cutshaw including a tip tip- In from a missed free throw and two by Eaton also Including a tip tip-In By the end of the period the Utes had widened their margin to 44 38 In the early part of the final quarter Long was taken out for North Sevier with five personals He was the only player lost that way In the game In the first few seconds of the period the Wolves scored and the Utes led by cm ly Iy four points About this time referee Labrum practically wore out his whistle and coach Ben Sorensen stalked out of the gym In disgust However the referee was penalizing each side about equally The coach came back after a minute or two and threw in an entirely new team There was barely a minute and half left to go and each team scored two points to wind the game up In favor of the Utes at 54 44 Eaton's score of 36 was outstanding and he had a lot of team support Cut 10 and Lee 8 A basketball story follows as It was prated In the Vernal Express on Feb 9 UTES ENTRENCHES AS REGION FAVORITES AFTER SPILLING UNION The Uintah Utes firmly established themselves as strong favorites to win the Uintah Division basketball crown for 1956 as they decisively defeated Union High School by a 60 36 score in the Utes gym I Friday Except for the first few minutes of the game Union was not much of a threat to the Utes The score was tied at two four and five but then the Utes ran up a 5 11 lead at the end of the first quarter Soon after the beginning of the second quarter the utes ran up a ten point lead which they maintained throughout the second and third quarters Halftime score was 2615 26 and the third quarter score was 42 32 Union lost Clayton Huber In the third quarter via the personal foul route which seemed to slow down their game con con- considerably considerably After 40 seconds of the fourth quarter Valoy Eaton left the game with five personal fouls after making 15 points for high scoring honors In the game Eaton was followed closely by Wayne Pope and Jerry Cutshaw of Uintah with 13 points each Next in line was Unions Union's Gordon Bascom with 11 points Though lots of enthusiasm was shown by the fans who were supporting their teams tempers were well controlled by byboth byboth both teams and spectators The crowd was well pleased with the performance of the sophomores playing on the B squads Uintah won by a score and showed great promise for the future of Uintah's basketball teams as the little Utes continually drove through the Union defense for lay up shots The Pep Clubs both from the visitors and home teams made their presence known with fine support for their respective respective tive teams The games were followed by bya bya a
