| Show rk t hank i Away from home Thanksgiving means different things to many people but one of the most common themes of the holiday is the opportunity opportunity to spend some time with family However for various reasons a number of people in the Uintah Basin will not be able to spend this holiday with their families According to Glenda Smarr a member of the Vernal Beta Nu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi a number of people in that situation are presently living in the Vernal area She said they have people from Kansas ansas Wyoming Texas Okla- Okla Oklahoma Oklahoma homa and other states who will ill not be able to tomake tomake make it home for Thanks Thanks- Thanksgiving Thanksgiving giving For this reason the group held helda a Thanksgiving dinner Sunday November 21 for all those who couldn't make it home The dinner was held Sunday so those individuals individuals duals with family here could have their private dinners this Thursday Each of those attending the dinner was asked to bring a dish they feel traditional for their family In this way there is a large diversity in the experience The economy is such that everyone just cant can't go home said Glenda She said the Sorority was formed many years ago as the What to Read Club It was a womans woman's group to keep you from going crazy said Glenda The organization is now inter inter- international na national and has four chapters in Vernal Verna They perform a number of civic projects each rear year Last year they provIded goods for the house for battered spouses The Beta Nu Chapter however is not the only chapter in Vernal providing Thanksgiving dinners for those without According to Glenda the XI Alpha XI chapter held such a dinner on Saturday November 20 as was for all members They also bring someone to the dinner who is all alone and has no place to turn The Xi Alpha Xi chapter served about 40 people and the Beta Nu chapter served about 55 people Glenda pointed Ld out that about 95 90 percent of these people are related to oil field work in one way or another She said for this reason many are a long longway longway way from home and these dinners provide them with witha a chance to be with others during Thanksgiving week She said the dinners are for young single people young couples and older couples Xi Alpha Xi has been doing this project for several years and the Beta Nu chapter began this year Along with these programs is one sponsored by GraCo They will be holding a dinner Thanksgiving day for about 75 people Glen Glen- Glenda da said they had about 11 people three years ago The people who attend this dinner come from all allover allover over the country This type of thing giVES giVE'S you a real opportunity opportunity ity to share a lot of the various various cultures from a- a around around round the country said Glenda Glenda said the Vernal Chapters of Beta Sigma Phi also have several activities planned for Chri Chri- Christmas one is an annual event of to the hospital and to shut shut ins ins within the community a aa arr a rr r su sua a P 3 idi fly F i w x SAFETY Safety FIRST Is the main reason to have a chimney cleaned In many cases It ItIs itis Is too much of ofa a bother for homeowners to clean their own and for this reason chimney sweepers like Scott Barrick are making a comeback from past history |
