Show Canadian Geese Transferred to Ouray Refuge By Don Refuge Manager Sixty Canada goose goslings ings were captured banded and transferred from Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in northern Utah last month to Ouray Refuge This Is the first In a series of introductions to be made Sn jn conjunction with a goose propagation plan Additional birds will be acquired each year until the success of the plan has been assured The purpose of the program Is to accelerate reproduction of Canada geese on the refuge In an effort to build up aloe a lc- lc at al flock of birds which will consider Ouray Refuge as their home These birds will also serve to attract fall migrants to the area Canada geese normally mate and reproduce when they are three years old In addition they will return to the area where hatched to nest and rear their young If geese are transferred while still in the gosling stage and are not permitted to mig mig- migrate rate they consider their new environment as home Past experience In such programs has shown that gees geese will return to their place ot of rearing if released too soon For this reason the young birds from Bear River will wUl willbe I be held in captivity until they are approaching their third year 1965 and they will wUl then be released into the marsh environment environment soon to tobe tobe be developed The public Is invited to Continued on page 8 Geese Gecse Continued from page 1 visit the refuge and to oh- oh observe serve the young geese in the pens located at the field headquarters site in Sheppard Shep- Shep Sheppard pard Bottoms three miles north of Ouray |
