Show Obituaries Ute leader succumbs in Salt Lake A man who dedicated his life liCe to t the e growth and development of oC his tribe succumbed to heart failure early August 13 in a Salt Lake City hospital FRANCIS 49 who led the Ute Ule Tribe for Cor eight years as chairman of the Uintah and Ouray Tribal Business Committee was laid to rest Saturday in Fort Duchesne A year ten-year tenure with the Business Committee began in 1965 when he was elected to the Council to represent the Un- Un Band of oC Utes His career In working for his people started 26 years ago when he first accepted employment with the tribe In addition to his responsibilities at the tribal offices he raised livestock IN 1971 in recognition of oC his integrity and leadership which were among the major factors in the economic progress of oC the tribe the Bureau of oC Indian Affairs Phoenix Area Office presented Mr the Outstanding Indian Leadership Award Because of oC his interest and and concern in the cultural preservation of oC the tribe he organized and directed the annual Fourth of July Celebration on the U 0 O Reservation for Cor the past seven years MR MU WY ASKET'S business involvement was in various areas of oC concerns which included included in in- membership on the Duchesne County Hospital Board Ute Development Committee Intermountain R Regional Medical Board Community Action Program Committee the Overall Economic Development Committee and the Livestock Enterprise Advisory Board His national involvement was evidenced by his charter membership in the National Tribal Chairmen's Association TilE THE UTE leader was born on the Ute Reservation on March 1 1926 to Burnett tu Pin wee and He was one of ten children born to the family The past tribal chairman was educated at the Whiterocks Boarding School He served his country as a m member of the armed services during the Korean Conflict In 1945 he married Gladys Clara and they were later divorced Two sons were born to this marriage FOR TilE THE past 23 years he has been married to Esther Patterson whom he married in 1952 Survivors include his widow Fort Duchesne sons sons Floy Floyd FloyS Martin Patrick Weldon Paul Hamilton Anthony Charles Gerald Wayne Elstone Bryce all of oC Fort Duchesne daughters Debra Kaye Lillian Carol and Ruth all of Fort Duchesne four grandchildren and one brother Edgar Macheaveant of Lapoint GRAVESIDE services were conducted Saturday at al the Fort Duchesne Cemetery Memorial services honoring Mr were scheduled Monday at the Purpose Multi-Purpose Building in Fort Duchesne The general public was invited to attend the services The tribal offices were closed Monday afternoon in honor of Mr |
