Show 1 f Voting e Wit with eh t their he f feet Once again the world is confronted with the terrible spectre of a whole population fleeing before an invading army In this case the scene is the Central Highlands of South Vietnam where refugees by the hundreds of thousands are streaming toward the coastal regions in an effort to escape the Communist takeover of the whole region In most cases they are walking out taking with them what few possessions they can carry on their backs or in carts Once more a poignant verdict is rendered given a choice almost any people will bear any hardship rather than live under Communist rule This is particularly significant in South Vietnam where for years we have heard a constant drumbeat of criticism of the Thieu government as corrupt and tyrannical These same critics seldom have anything negative to say about the regime in North Vietnam whose legitimacy they accept without question Now at least we have a vivid testimony of how the South Vietnamese people feel about it They are arc voting with their feet against Hanoi and in favor of at least leasta a brief hold on freedom And as landless refugees that is about all they will have Neither is this an uninformed choice The Communists have been operating in the Central Highlands for many years They and their methods are well known to those who now flee from them As this tragedy plays itself out there is a lesson to be learned and it is this man is a creature whose deepest instinct instinct instinct in in- is to have some control over his own destiny Communism is a political theory and an economic program its it's attractiveness is largely limited to intellectual intellectuals power seekers and manipulators It never has and never will appeal to the common man who is always the one controlled manipulated exploited and expropriated expropriated expropriated ex ex- ex- ex under Communist regimes Champions of Hanoi take n note te |
