Show Educators and Schools Central School Uses New Reading Times By Uintah Education Members Last spring It was proposed that Central Central Cen School initiate a reading program that would place more emphasis in the area of reading without too much additional addi cast cost and would provide a better belter teacher student ratio the premise being that the amount of time each pupil could receive from a teacher is the critical factor factor fac tor which determines success IN THE past Central School has tried both staggered time in the first and secand second sec sec- ond and grades and cross grade plans Their plans helped certain grades more than others but our plan was aimed at helping all grades Basically the plan involves the entire staff grades G 1 6 16 Reading is taught to the first and second grade students during the first period of the morning and to the 3 grades during during dur duro ing the last period of the school day We began our plan after getting final approval from the district office and parents starting the third week of school It is too early to evaluate it but the teachers are arc putting in much more time in preparation and teaching than under the old schedule Greater emphasis is being placed on reading than has be been n done before EVERYONE INVOLVED is hopeful that the results will more than repay the time and effort involved in the program and though we have some problems still to be resolved vO we feel leel that we are arc on the right track Language arts is basic to all education and reading is basic to language arts If H we can teach children to read adequately adequately ade we can consider ourselves successful suc sue In the words of Moliere who said It is not alone what we d db de but aLS also what we ve do not do for which we weare weare weare are are acc accountable 1 |
