Show Vernless L. L Olsen Former Resident Dies in Oregon Funeral services recently honored Vernless LeRoy Olsen 71 of Scappoose Oregon former resident of Vernal who died In St. St Helens after residing in the Scappoose area for the past 29 years Mr Olsen was born April 11 1898 In Wellington and attended school there in ina a room one-room tent AT THE age of eight ht lie he first exhibited exhibit exhibit- ed signs of leadership that later showed showed show show- e ed when he became a parent husband and leader He lie was left to take care of the farm and his younger sister for three weeks at that time and did everything everything every every- thing from cooking and housecleaning to feeding the cattle At the age of 16 18 Mr Olsen left home and went to Burley Idaho where he worked on a farm for two years lie He took up the sport of wrestling and became quite an accomplished wrestler lIe He became state champion in his weight limit HE HAD met some historically famous famous fam fam- ous personalities in his lifetime Including including ing Buffalo Bill BiU and Pancho Villa He lIe Hemet met Buffalo Bill at a rodeo radeo and Pancho Villa while a member of the U U. S. S Cavalry Cavalry Ca Ca- valry before Mr Villa became an out out- law Upon his return to Utah from Idaho Mr Olsen once again took up farming He lie met Hazel Ha Kendall and they were married April I 1 1921 In Neola The marriage marriage mar mar- was solemnized in the Mantl Temple eight years later THE OLSEN family settled in Vernal after a time where Mr Olsen farmed some then gave up farming for leather leatherwork work He learned the leather trade from froma a blind man while working for 15 years as an apprentice for Newton Brothers lIe He opened his own shop In Vernal which he operated for 13 years MR OLSEN later moved his family to Oregon where he worked for awhile in a paper mill then went to work for forthe forthe the West Coast Shoe Factory In Scap Scat After spending 12 years working at West Coast he once again opened his own shop in Portland which he operated operated oper opere until retirement In 1 66 He lie was an active member of the Church lIe He became a Seventy and was wad wada wasa a teacher in the Seventies Quorum for several years For two to years he served as a stake missionary in the Columbia River Stake MR OLSEN was survived by his wife of Scappoose three daughters Shirley Day of Scappoose Lola Jennings St. St Helens and Lillian Lewis Orland California California Cal Cel four sons Veril Verll Vancouver Joseph Imperial Beach California Ferris Ferris Fer Fer- ris in the U. U S. S Air Force and Cedric of Warren Oregon Also surviving are a brother Leonard Olsen Whittier California and 21 grandchildren grandchildren grand grand- children and five great SERVICES WERE held In the chapel of the Rushing Coleman Funeral Home Vault interment was at Columbia Memorial Memorial Me Me- morial Gardens Scappoose |
