Show History of Rhoades Gold Gok Mine MineTo MineTo To he be Published By Kerry Ross Boren A subject of much controversy in the Basin region is that of the Lost Rhoades Mine When Brigham Young and the Mormons Mormons Mor Mol mons came to Utah in 1847 they encountered encountered en en- countered the Ute chieftain Walker and his band of warriors In the days of peace with this Indian Brigham Young was given the secret of a fabulous vein of gold secluded somewhere in the High Uinta Mountains ONLY ONE man Thomas Rhoades was given the knowledge of the location location loca tion of this gold Rhoades sometimes accompanied by his son Caleb made frequent trips into the mountains and brought out a great deal of this gold for the use of Brigham Young and the Mormon Church When Thomas Rhoades died his son Caleb resumed the mysterious treks into the mountains often at the threat of his own life by the Indians and greedy men who trailed him CALEB RHOADES as had his father before him took an oath before Brigham Brig ham Young and Chief Walkers Walker's Walkers Walker's Walker Walk Walk- er ers er's s brother and successor to the chieftainship chief of the tribe never to reveal the secret of the location of the mine mineto to any man Caleb broke this oath only once when he revealed the location of the gold ledge to his half half brother brother Enoch Rhoades Enochs Enoch's s body was discovered pierced with Indian arrows and Caleb never told another man Calebs Caleb's s father Thomas Rhoades had once once discovered a buckskin map on the body of a dead Spaniard which revealed reveal reveal- ed the location of several Spanish mines in the High FOR MANY years both Thomas and Caleb worked these Spanish mines mines When Caleb died he left the buckskin map to his wife Ever after treasure hunters have assumed that this map led to the famous Lost Rhoades Mine whereas where where- as it was to the Spanish mines mines RECENTLY Y TWO Utah writers Kerry Ross Boren of Manila and Gale R R.
