Show Vernal Elks To Dedicate Lodge Sunday Sunday at 1 p pm p.m. m the new home of the Vernal Elks at 35 North Third West will be dedicated by the Utah Elks Association Association As As- Officers Alton J J. J Thompson special deputy of the Grand Exalted Ruler will present a special address to the lodge during the dedication ceremony cere cere- mony Activities for the dedicating weekend include a dinner dance Saturday Saturday Satur Satur- day night beginning at 7 p pm p.m. m The Vernal Ladies Ladles of Elks will host a breakfast Sunday morning at 9 a am a.m. m The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks originally entitled The Jolly Corks was organized under the latter name in November 1867 On February 16 1868 a resolution was adopted by bythe bythe bythe the 15 member lodge to change the name from The Jolly Corks to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Over the past years years has grown from one small organized lodge to more than 2 2100 active lodges lodge by the end of 1968 Total membership in the order at the end of that year Was was in excess of 1500 THE VERNAL Elks Lodge No 2375 constitutes one of 16 lodges in Utah The first organizational meeting to form forman an Elks Lodge in Vernal was held March 27 1967 in the Uintah County Courthouse Courthouse Court Court- house under the sponsorship of the Price Elks Lodge On June 25 1967 the Vernal Elks Lodge was officially instituted by the Grand Lodge Officers At that time there were charter members Albert W W. Heggen was elected the first Exalted Ruler of the newly instituted Vernal Elks Lodge Members of the Vernal Elks remodeled remodeled re reo modeled the old Hobby Shop building at West Main transforming it into their new home MARION DALENE succeeded AI Al Heggen Heggen Heg Heg- gen as Exalted Ruler in 1968 The Lodge membership had grown to by the end of that year Bernard E E.
