Show I Lake Lak P Powell well Study Shows Types of Fish Caught in 68 Fishing and research at Lake Powell were featured Ina in ina a report by Utah fisheries blo bio biologist logist Kent Miller at the recent recent re reo cent convention of the Utah Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Recreation atlon Federation MR MILLER reported that in 1968 anglers anglers' spent an estimated estimated esti estl mated hours fishing at Lake Powell and caught nearly fish of all spec spec- ies According to Mr Miller about 47 per cent of the fish caught were largemouth bass 21 per cent were channel catfish catfish cat cat- fish 17 per cent were bluegills blue blue- gills nine per cent were black and one per percent percent percent cent were rainbow trout Mr Miller said Lake Powell is now about miles long and contains about surface acres of water which is about 35 per cent of cap cap- The maximum depth is about feet at the dam and ands the water level is expected to torise torise torise rise 40 30 feet vertically this this' year based on the predicted runoff REVIEWING the major species ape i cies dies of fish In 10 the lake Mr Miller said that the largemouth largemouth large large- mouth bass were stocked in 1963 and 1964 and have been reproducing since 1964 and appear appear appear ap ap- pear to be doing well providing provid III tag ing very cry g good od fishi fishing this spring The largest bass caught weighed seven pounds nine ounces The black crappie crapple were stocked in Bay in and 1965 and are reproducing reproducing and spreading throughout through through- out th the reservoir They are arenow arenow arenow now found from the dam up the lake to 20 30 20 30 miles above Bullfrog Bay which is over miles above the dam CRAPPIE are usually found in schools and are located in areas where they can find cover such as trees or rock rockslide rockslide rockslide slide areas There have been crappie taken as large as two pounds Walleye were not introduced ed into the lake but came downstream from the Green River Their numbers appear to be expanding with fish up to seven pounds being taken CHANNEL catfish are another another an an- other species which were not planted in the lake but were already In the river system before the gates to the dam were closed Channel catfish are reproducing in the lake and the best fishing is during the summer months The largest largest larg largo est fish caught came from the extreme upper end of the lake and weighed 25 pounds Rainbow trout are providing only a small percentage of the fish c caught uh at Lake Powell A plant of fish a about bout six inches long last October has been followed In their movements movements move move- ments by using echo soundIng sound sound- Ing tog equipment and gill nets ABOUT 10 per cent of these fish were marked to allow Identification Id as they were followed followed fol fol- fol lowed in their travels and to aid determining the mortality on these fish in the lake The majority of the rainbow trout is staying in the lower low lower er 15 miles of the lake and generally moves out of Wah Wah- weep Bay into the the main chan chilD I nel of the lake THREADFIN shad are the newest fish stocked in Lake Powell and were planted as a forage fish in anticipation of possibly introducing striped bass Shad are reproducing now and are expected to move into other areas from the original planting site in W Bay They will provide some forage for fOJ o other er fish |
