Show J cla- cla Straws By Jack Wallis Instead of trying their luck at their favorite fishing spots on the general fishing season opening day many county and city heavy equipment operators and supervisors spent the early hours Saturday Saturday Saturday Sat Sat- morning correcting a situation that could have proved to the entire water supply culinary arid and irrigation coming into Ashley Valley Due to quick action in summing up the unusual problem and working with nearly all accesses washed out heavy equipment was driven into the origin of trouble and the errant Ashley Creek was placed back in its channel before more destruction occurred We feel we owe a debt of appreciation appreciation tion to all those who worked all aU day Saturday and part of Sunday restoring things back to normal after such a near catastrophe A lot of damage was done but it could have been worse 7 It all goes to show that most of us Wake ake ke our everyday water supply for for- Wanted ranted Can you imagine the problems l aused by having the entire water sup sup- supply supply ply ply cut off for several days No drinking drinking drinking drink drink- ing water no irrigation water no water 1 at all Imagine the full impact on our community if it was to lose its entire water supply Without water we are nothing This is why the reclamation projects are arc so important to the development of the west We must develop every drop of precious water getting all the work workout out of it we can before it leaves this naturally arid area Well anyway thanks thanks' fellows for protecting protecting protecting pro pro- our water supply r rIf If you hit the ceiling when you opened your 1973 property valuation notice last week dont don't feel bad you have lots of company Due to the new tax assessment reappraisal l the valuation of Vernal City jumped from in 1972 to in 1973 an increase e of 17 11 million due mainly to the state reappraisal reap program This excludes the state appraised utilities minerals and industry in the city The county property valuation valuation tion has also b been en reappraised but will not increase proportionately as muchas the city because over over two thirds of the county valuation comes from minerals industry oil and utilities and these have not been reappraised Last year approximately 8 million of the total 36 million county valuation was appraised to real estate and buildings This 8 milli million n may go as high as 12 million under the new state reappraisal There is one loophole for the taxpayer though The Governor has stated that the new reappraisal program cannot increase the county tax income more than 6 per per- cent This must be adjusted by lowering lower ing the mill levy and not be used to add additional revenue to the city and county governments A it lower lev levy will help a little but it will help the larger taxpayers in the oil mineral and utilities assessments more than the smaller taxpayers They will get a mill levy reduction on over 23 million dollars whereas the property will ill get a lower levy on only 8 million or the new reappraised value of ol probably 12 million So no matter how hew you look at It taxes are going up Get braced for your official tax notice in September save a little extra money because you are going to need it it I r y i |
