Show THE VOICE OF BUSINESS Theres There's A Always ays A to d I Price for Security By Arch Booth Executive vice president president president dent of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States I have a friend whose experiences might interest you Hes He's one of those rugged outdoor types who spend a lot lotof lotof lotof of time in th the wilds hunting game You know the kind irregular hours independent independent independent in in- dependent always around The life had its risks He lie wits was a purist Hed He'd go off into the woods and live only on what he could kill going hungry if the hunt was unsuccessful And being a aloner aloner aloner loner he always risked sickness or injury injury injury in in- jury in places far from help Sometimes Sometimes Sometimes Some Some- times the nights were cold and the shelter poor Nevertheless I doubt that the idea of changing his life style ever entered his head Hes He's a doer not a thinker BUT THERE were others who did give some thought to it For one thing trung they disapproved of hunting and really couldn't find much redeeming social value value value val val- ue in his behavior For another they were horrified at the thought that he might go hungry or suffer from a lack of medical attention or from inadequate housing These people feel that such things are a right to which everyone is entitled Conformity My 1 friend wasn't interested He Ile seemed seemed seemed seem seem- ed not even to understand what they were talking about Unfortunately it is a of the morally self-righteous self that they dont don't take no for an answer Once they have convinced themselves of the rightness rightness rightness right- right ness of their course then inaction equates with dereliction and by definition anyone anyone anyone any any- one who disagrees is wrong And usually usually usually us us- before long anyone who fails to agree enthusiastically enough becomes at least suspect ANYWAY IT wasn't long until an effort effort effort ef ef- ef- ef fort was organized to secure for my friend these rights which he evidently valued rather lightly The reasoning was that he had been raised in a poor environment environment environ environ- ment where he was deprived of the opportunity opportunity op Ope op- op to learn the proper outlook Put him in a a proper environment find him a useful job restore to him his unclaimed unclaimed unclaimed un un- un- un claimed rights and hed he'd settled down and come to appreciate his benefactors New Outlook So they made him an offer he couldn't refuse He lie has a steady job now He keeps regular hours He lie never h has s to worry about where the next meal is coming from He lie has a warm safe dry place to live And he gets free medical care at public expense DOES HE appreciate clate it Im I'm not sure Ive I've never asked him because I suspect that if he replied at all it would be with an angry growl You might ask him yourself sometime You can find him liim most days pacing back and forth behind the bars of the tiger cage down at the zoo |
