Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR 1 11 SPEAKER OF HOUSES REPLIES TO CHARGES Statement by Franklin Gun nell Speaker of the House Utah Legislature As the speaker of the House of Representatives in the Utah State Legislature r I feel it Is my duty to reply to the recent irresponsible attacks made on the House by the go governor The Utah State House of Re Re- Representatives is the body most representative of oC the citizens of the entire state slate The members of the House are local people elected by the citizens to r re- re represent present them thern In the state law making body Each represents a small enough group that he can be close to the local peoples people's feelings ONE BASIC reason for the failure of th the governor to undo und understand the accomplishments of this session of the legislature is that he has been most concern concern- concerned ed d with seizing greater power and concentrating It in his own land hand The peoples people's Legislature conversely has sought to keep klep the decision M making power In Inthe inthe the hands of the people while providing the chief executive with the tools and organization necessary to operate efficient ly Iy At the beginning of the ses ses- sesSion slon Sion last January the ive leadership outlined n a seven seven- point program of action which was to be a guide for fot the legis session This program endorsed by the people who elected us to the Legislature included promoting industrial development providing help and encouragement for education tion avoiding tax increases strengthening crime anti laws consolidating health services revising and Improving election laws and reorganizing depart depart- departments departments ments of state government for greater efficiency REGARDLESS OF the gov governor's criticism which has been characterized as being made to further his own leal ical ends the records now show that great gains were made in all of the areas which the Leg outlined for work All bills were thoroughly studied and debated All groups and Individuals who had suggestions or arguments were given court consideration WE TAKE pride in the fact that partisan politics has play ed so little part In the deli even though it might have been so easy for fot the majority party to have run rough shod over the minority When we conducted our busi ness we did so with confidence that we had performed our duty to the people back home expeditiously studiously with dignity and In good faith |
