Show Oil Painting of First Ashley Valley nUey Cabin is Presented to DUP Museum By Bile Bille R 1 An oil painting of the original Pardon Dodds cabin built in Old Old Ashley in 1873 was was present present- presented ed totne to the Uintah County Daugh of Utah Pioneers by artist Sara Perry on November 9 at ilta ata a meeting of the May Ruple DUP UP Cam Camp of which Mrs Per ry is a member COUNTY DUP officers rs Thel Thel- Thel Thelma ma Oaks First Vice Pres Mil lie laws Haws Second Vice Pre Press I Sue Suc Watson Corres Sec and nillie Custodian of Relics were present to accept r t the e painting for the DUP Mu s scum um Pre President id nt Norma Mc Lean was not able to attend The meeting was h held ld at the he home of Mrs Perry with Mr Mrs Harold Hullinger and Mrs Perry as Captain Pardon Dodds father of Joseph Dodds came to the Uintah Basin in 1867 at which time he was leas appointed Indian Agent Agent for the Utes In that year the Agency had been moved ed from Daniels Canyon to a location on the the upper Duchesne River now known as Hanna with with Captain Dodds as agent agent In 1868 it vas was moved to Rook Rock north of f the pre present nt town of Duchesne and on Christmas Day of the Same year to Whiterocks Here Mr 11 Dodds remained as agent until February 14 1873 when in the company of Morris Evans and Dick Huffaker he came to Ash Ash- Ashle Ashley le ley y Valley Theirs wa the first wagon to be driven into the ar ar- ar area ea THE DODDS r cabin bill first c cab cab- cabin b in built In Ashley Valley by white man nian was constructed of cottonwood logs It was located just north of Ashley Creek near the north edge of the Val Val- Valley Icy ley en the present Jo JoG Dodds farm A number of years ago when the old cabin was torn down I the logs were wew saved and mark mark- ed cd by Joe and Marie l Dodds for the Daughters of utah Pio It was hoped that a suit suit- suitable suitable able location IO could coulet be found for fora a museum and the cabin ed However since this lad had not hOt been possible jt it was recently suggested that an oil painting would preserve the memory of the old historical structure which had served d as home for forthe forthe the Dodds family and in which Joe Dodds had been born In 1897 a new frame house was constructed nearby and has now been replaced by a modern brick home FOR HER painting Mrs Per ry obtained early photographs from Joe and Marie Maric Dodds A trip was made to the farm to look at the location to deter deter- determine mine soil color and to note co co- co color lor and character of the ba back grou 8 hills Rock sa m pIes were also obtained This mater lal the photographs and other details furnished by Mr Dodds enabled Mrs Perry to make an exact replica of the cabin and surroundings In 1964 a historical marker was constructed near the old cabin site and dedicated by the Uintah County Daughters of Utah Pioneers under the direct Hon of Chairman Oral Richens THE NEW painting depicting the cabin in its original set set- setting setting ting will be placed soon in the DUP DUI Pioneer Museum on South Fifth West Vest Street |
