Show q t tr r r I DR HOWARD R CHRISTOF ERSON missionary report Africa ca Envoy Speaks s Sunday At Local Church Dr Howard R superintendent of the famous McCord l Zulu Hospital in Dur ban South Africa will speak at Kingbury Community Church Sunday at the 11 am worship service and at a pm dis I group meeting Dr serves as a medical missionary In South Africa under the United Church I Board for World Ministries I overseas agency of the United Church of Christ a union of Congregational Christian and ancI Evangelical and Reformed Churches HE JOINED the medical staff of McCord Hospital in 1953 as assistant to Dr Alan Boardman Taylor When Dr Taylor re turned to the United States on retirement pre furlough in 1964 Dr was appointed superintendent Highly regarded for far its pio- pio pioneer pio user neer work and racial multi staff I the bed McCord Zulu Hospi tal was founded in 1909 by the the Congregation Christian over over- overseas seas mission board to serve nl Europeans non of the Durban area More than patients and aad outpatients were treated there last year Dr and his wife the former Ruth Gregerson a graduate of St Lukes Luke's Hospital School of Nursing Chicago aid ald ell ed in establishing a nurses training school at the McCord Hospital for Zulu women An some 35 women complete the year four course of training which is comparable to the best American training standards r Dr was no stranger to South Africa when he heI I went there as as a doctor 12 years ago Son of missionary parents he was taken to that country as a baby and nd spent most of his boyhood among the Bantu people HE CAME TO THE United States wh n he was 16 to com com- complete his education After gra- gra graduating gra from the Naperville HIgh School Naperville m he studied at North Central College Naperville Wabash College Crawfordsville Ind and the Un of Illinois He graduate ed cd from the University of Ill Medical School in 1947 interned at St Lukes Luke's Hospital Chicago and served as assis taut tant surgical resident there IThe now In Inthis inthis this country on furlough have three children Paul 13 Mark 11 an and Lynn 9 |
