Show Popular Little Gallery of Arts l Observes First Anniversary Here By Mrs R W Patterson Little Lint Gallery president April 4 1965 saw the first fust an anniversary of the Little Gallery of Arts Vernal can indeed be proud of this addition to the community So many activities have taken place at the Gallery in the past year the boal board of of directors felt they owed the people a report on what has been accomplished during the maiden voyage THE CURRENT exhibits are of course one of the most im ho activities of any art center Nine exhibits have bave been displayed since we o opened ned These ha have e covered a aide aide ide variety of art forms and media They were in order of ap- ap appearance appearance Vernal Collects paintings loaned by art collect collect- collectors ors in the Uintah Basin Inv In than dian Arts and Crafts I n d I a n paintings and beadwork Uintah Basin Artists group show of work by local artists from classes taught by Prof G Dibble and Mrs R W Patterson Group Show instructors of the Salt Lake Art Center showed many types of media and styles of painting Four Man Show f featured the works of Df Uz Liz Enyeart Mary Patterson Linda Pratt and Edythe Shim min nin Thirty by Eleven displayed paintings in oil and watercolor by instructors of Brigham Young University Creative Photography emphasized pho pho- photography as an art form by Leo Thorne C L DeVed and Arn Arn- Arnild old ild Baker Christmas Creations was a first annual sale show by mom memo bers Ders of the Little Gallery of Arts which featured many or ginal crafts and paintings Student Exhibit from sity ity of Utah a traveling exhibit it t sponsored by the Rotary Club lub Uintah Basin Rock and Mineral Exhibit showed the various processes of lapidary work vork also on exhibit during this his show were paintings by artist rust members of the Gallery Permanent Coli C e c t ion I o n from rom the Salt Lake Art Center contained works by ary ry American artists and some century paintings THERE CHANGING exhibits are re to the artist an invaluable source of study and inspiration to o the citizen and collector a source of interest and tion on to the schools a source of art education lUon and tier In th the first year ear the Gallery gave SO 80 school and guided tours to tl over 1204 1200 children and adults Individual Indi visitors numbered about There is now a D Docent ent Group of trained volunteer guides who conduct tours by appointment Tours ma may be booked any time of da day six days a week Many fine compliments have e been rev reo ce ed concerning the great en and enjoyment ment this program is bringing to people in the Basin We are looking forward to many more groups of young oung people and ad ails both residents and visitors taking advantage antage of this free community service A UNIQUE service offered by bythe bythe the Gallery is the Rental Sales Service This type of operation is a recent addition to the World Orld of art which brings or paintings s within the reach of everyone For a nominal fee feea a picture may be rented for far a two month period At the end of that time the work may be bea bea a returned b renewed for fora fora a further two months or c purchased with the rental fee applied to the sale price All AU pictures in the Rental Sales Gal lery are by artist members A tremendous sales record has been set during the first year of operation Now How do dl we know we set a fine record We compared notes with similar similar- type organization in other towns all of them somewhat larger and found our record excellent Some purchases were made by tourists A fine staff of hostesses hostes- hostes hostesses ses all volunteer workers are on duty whenever the Gallery is open IN AUGUST 1944 the Gallery became an associate member of the Western Association of Art Museums The benefits of be longing to this organization are both economic and professional and too numerous to go into sere here We were one of only three members in the state of Utah Ugh High standards of operations are required for membership Through the year more ser vices rides to the community were added to those original ones In n September at art for the first time Visitors and friends are always welcome at these programs TOURISTS and rind find the Gallery a pleasant place to spend an hour and are very impressed that Vernal isso is isso so progressive as to have an anart art center This summer the of of- of officers of the Gallery have plan ned sed the summer hours to better suit the needs of both visitors and residents The Little Gallery of Arts has certainly added much to the area This first year has un an questionably proven the need for or an art center in Eastern Utah The tremendous job ac acv by members of the Gallery is doubly impressive when rhen it is considered they are ill all very green and did a lot of the job learning The fine professional advice from other members embers of the Western Asso Asso- Association of Art Museum made the he Gallery the successful oper ration that it now is During the maiden voyage the he Gallery did not solicit any community wide support The founders wanted to prove what an nn art center can do for an anarea area rea and feel this has been lone done The Little Gallery of Arts Artsis is s a vital asset to a growing Vernal fernal Anyone who believes in inthe the he future of
