War Effort Spurned T Early in to 1941 the Utah Retail Grocers Association mad other tom lOrn interests sponsored enactment of Senate SenaH Bill dl 44 14 whICh winch HI chain stores to slow death by special taxes 54 5 26 qu it Utah voters then signed a referendum petition pi pl icing the rs issue uc on the ballot at the general election on November 3 1 1942 4 Since these actions occurred when the nation wis w is still it p peace pe the chain cham stores welcomed the referendum vote as an opportunity forthe for forthe forthe the people of Utah to determine whether or not they wanted chin ch ch in t stores in 10 Utah However after Pearl Harbor and the subsequent men icing of Japanese aggression toward our shores the Utah Chain Cham Stores Assoc in 10 the interest ofa of a united support of the war effort proposed to 1 the Utah Retail Grocers Association a joint action aimed at postponing the referendum for the duration Our Invitation Has Not Been Accepted Although over five weeks have passed we have not been advIsed of any action upon our invitation and Mr Sherman P Lloyd in JO a ar report published to the members of the Utah Retail Grocers pub t r in 10 the March issue of the Intermountain Retailer states that our proposal for unity is to be ignored Mr Lloyd writes The officers of the Association immediately met to con on ont t seder sIder what action should be taken to meet the chain cham store proposal It soon became apparent that the wisest I course to follow for the present at least was to tin maint-tin an attitude of silence andin and in to the thc meantime build our own resources and our own faCilities to the point where we will be able to follow through on any ny action which we start When the Association begins this fight we will use our own weapons
