haslem grani grandsons sons of the deceased early LU life mrs hartle was born may 22 1871 at salt lake city secona second child of william and ellen wheatley cook who came from england in their youth to settle 1 in salt lake cit city her mother tit ald d in 1876 at the birth of the fourth child when priscilla was five years of age she was cared tor for by her grandmothers clifton a n nd d wheatley and other relatives until her father lather married lydia hartle of pleasant grove in 1870 1879 As a child priscilla was small and not very strong for some time she was sent to sunday school and primary in the ward of salt lake city when it was a new ward and was baptized a member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints in the endowment house august 3 1880 she attended school under a mrs tollet and later under her son matthew toilet in their homa learns trad trade when she was about sixteen years of age she aceved six months apprenticeship under jane stewart to leam learn dressmaking at the end of that time she received a dress model worth 5 and began working for a week in time her wages were raised to per week when she left the dressmaking shop where she had trained she went out sewing for 1 a day but only worked part time about tills this time she assisted her stepmother step mother in making her first burial clothes for theraby the baby of a danish woman who lived near by this was a time when there were no mortuaries and tho the relief society took care of the dead in subsequent years mrs hartle ars to do much of this work in ashley va valley sometimes som almes staying up all bigi night to complete a suit of clothing for a funeral and then going home alone in her home horse drawn buggy ui in the dark she was married lo 10 willium hartle may 10 1891 they went to pocatello idaho Idabo to live where mr hartle was employed in the road chops shops while they were there the townsite te ot of pocatello was surveyed and auctioned oft off formerly it had been a part pad of the indian reservation a small railroad town the hartles bought two small lots and built r little tous on them later loiter 1 ney cy 1 bought bau i cht five live other lots batsold would meet her husband in ogden from ogden the party went up the weber river to evanston through bridger henrys fork and over the mountain to ashley they stopped at ashley creek where they camped for a few days while mr hartle looked for a piece of land before long he decided to go go to dry fork accordingly the wagon was unloaded to go to the mo mountain buntain for house logs the house was soon up and they moved into it but soon moved to the new settlement of dry fork mr hartle worked for the farmers through the fall and then hauled timber for a nw new home in march following tile advice of mrs hartles fai father lier who had visited them they left dry fork end moved down to the valley to stein aker draw where they lived for five years the second child rebecca alice was bom born dec 12 1894 about this time mrs hartle affiliated with the vernal ward and began attending meetings every fourth sunday about all that was possible living so far from the meeting house the tle hartleb hartles third child was bom born july 30 1897 aid a id was christened lida dudne during these years the hartles worked hard ard but were subjected to many trials so that they failed to make any headway financially reservoirs would wash out cattle wander wonder away water had haa to be hauled for everything even the household use finally they bought 80 acres of land on ashle ashley creek here they lived only two 60 miles from the chapel so were able to attend church regularly here too they worked hard and now began to raise crops and purchase machinery they had a garden and were able to support their children and to do better financially soon they bought two cows the farm had a house two log rooms which they rep repaired alred and cleaned here they made their home for twenty years the fourth child of the family was bom born march 12 1900 he lie was named Reuben mrs hartle was church service society visiting teacher with margaret NV weeks beeks as her companion october 21 1905 she was made ass assistant iMant secretary secre secretary tarr of the vernal ward relief society in 1807 1907 she wa was made a sunday school teacher in the union ward sunday school and was also made a member of the stake board and a year later was made secretary of the sunday school in 1908 1909 she was released as a visiting teacher and made secretary treasurer of the relief society when the vernal ward was divided the hartles w were ere in vernal first ward mrs hartle was again asked to serve as secre tary treasurer of the relief society in which capacity she served while the organization was raising funds to buy a small brick house from the school district for a relief society socie ty home in 1 1915 the vernal first ward was again divided this time to form ashley ward upon jeorga mrs hartle was made first counselor in the relief society and a nd secretary secret ary of the sunday school the relief society of ashley ward rented an old log house in which to hold their meetings and when it was torn down they worked hard to raise money to build a place of their own the ladies donated eggs chickens garden stuff gram grain made quilts rugs etc gave dances gaisea raised beans and corn in 1918 the hartles sold their home buying land across the cheek and nearer to town putting themselves back into vernal veal first ward again in 1919 she again was made secretary treas trea aurer ot the relief society which position she held until eleven years inter later when she was made chairman of a committee to sew for the dead husband dies in september 1927 mr hartle went to salt lake and other places to visit and then went to logan for an operation he developed pneumonia and died november 21 she cared for the home for for the following two years and then rented it and went to salt lake returning the following spring sprin in ter her later years she suffered a great deal gars from rom asthma and hay fever but remained iema ined in her home next door to her son reuben and cared tor for it and herself |
