Show proposal for yampa rim road up to colorado the following letter was writ ten by G E dirac tor of the utah field 11 house U 1 e of 01 natural history at vei vernal 1 t to 0 the salt lake tribune and was also sent to D 11 chairman of the utah state highway commission it was with considerable difficultly that I 1 repressed a smile when I 1 read the editorial THE ROAD TO DINOSAUR in the july 20 1953 issue ot of the salt lake tribune quoting bernard devoto on his comment to the effect that UTAH should build a drive along the yampa canyon rim mr devoto is apparently not aware that ALL of the yam yarn ua canyon rim lies in colorado however desirable a rim drive might be I 1 am sure that utah would not care to build any roads lor for colorado having plenty to keep her busy at home in all fairness it must be pointed out that mr devotus Dc De error Is understandable because the dirt road which leaves U S highway no 40 branches off from this scenic national artery on the utah side of the state line soon entering colorado although there is 13 nothing to indicate when the traveler crosses over into our famous sister state had mr devoto been more observant he could have mado a real practical suggestion with reference to what utah might do in tho the way of improving an access road into dinosaur national monument the road from jensen utah at the junction with ith U S no 40 leads to the dinosaur dinosaur national monument headquarters area this is the road over which 99 per cent of the visitors to the monument travel in order to see the museum dinosaur quarry and seen scenic c split moun mountain maln gorge this is not a county road aa as mr devoto implies but Is state of utah highway no it utah were to build colorados yam yarn continued on page 10 I 1 PROPOSAL FOR YAMPA RIM HIM ROAD continued from page 9 pa any canyon him rim drive it would involve approximately 40 miles of road if utah were to improve and black top her own entrance road to the monument it t would entail building slightly over 4 miles of highway in other words it would be ten times as easy for utah to 16 build her own road as it would be to build the tim drive tor for colorado this move is all the more urgent ur geat and desirable inace in the immediate future because the national park service is black topping its part of the road into the headquarters area of the monument this summer I 1 am certain that if mr devoto had all these facts available he would plug as hard tor for this very short entrance road in utah as he has antly plugged tor for a much longer road in colorado here at the museum we contact oa approximately travelers per year you will be pleased to know that the roads of utah are seldom a subject of coave conversation with these visitors we have heard very few complaints over ever utah roads on the contrary people have tm been so 90 fascinated by the state and so profuse in their praise of it that they have either forgotten some sections of roads w which aich may not have been all they should or they never noticed them in the first place any ni rw tiva of utah who thinks his road roads are in a bad shape need only travel in a few other othe r states and heu be more happy to get back home and travel the roads he was complaining about this is not to say that utah roads are perfect and need no improving it Is merely to state that in the overall national picture utah has no cause to have an inferiority ferio rity complex where her roads are concerned G E nt proper heat treatment of garbage fed to livestock and poultry kills disease producing organisms and can cut animal disease losses of the SO 50 leading V U S coal mines each producing more than a million tons annually only two are anthracite one la is and the remaining 47 are bituminous founded more e than 13 centuries ago aco the moslem modem religion haa spread Vre act ww om the globe with no 0 clergy cl gy no pontiff P tiff and A scant t liturgy islam today abers adherents plant grass waterways in the BUM summer mer for movin moving rl the earth and seed seeding ing this la fall |
