Show huge skull of monster Is new find at dinosaur monument but for the tb extreme care and diligence of the workmen at the dinosaur quarry science would have lost one of the rarest finds probably ihus thus far struck at tho the famous fossil bed near the mouth of the beautiful split canyon of the he mintaha Uin Uinta taha hs on wednesday of last week while working on the large dinosaur now being excavated for the university of utah workmen came across what was supposed by them to be ribs of at a stegosaurus of which many separate bones have been found while excavating and which are now of no particular scientific value and of or not sufficient worth to warrant the expenditure of at time and money necessary to get them out golden york foreman in charge was away at the time and as the find did not look like the general run of bones of at the supposed brou to they are excavating it was decided to call prof earl douglass who baa has the general supervision of the quarry and find out whether the exposed piece of bone was the now despised stegosaurus after a little more excavating had been done the famous expert realized a rich find of at some kind had been located and in such a position as to make him believe it would be a coveted skull of at one of the monsters of the rocky bed probably that of the huge giant now being unearthed it will probably equal in size the large brontosaurus of tho the carnegie museum which is 80 or more feet in length and tho the largest complete dinosaur mounted careful examination convinced prof douglass another rare dinosaur skull bad had been found pa tient work has disclosed that the skull Is a now specie and nearly a yard in length with 5 teeth of the skull showing while the dinosaur now being excavated has been provisionally called a brontosaurus Brouto prof douglass after examining the texture and form of the bones surmises it is of at a new now specie and if the skull and skeleton prove to belong to the same animal then prof doulass douglass states both are apparently new now to science the teeth which have been referred to brontosaurus are not of the shape of at those of the new find but complete skull of the former Is yet to bo be found prof douglass je is greatly elated over the discovery and can scarcely watt wait until enough dough e excavating la Is done to give him more knowledge he ile immediately telegraphed dr frederick G pack geologist of at tho the of utah probably dr pack continued on page six column pour four huge skull of monster new find continued from page pa go L 1 column four will make a special trip to the quarry later the skull will bo be blocked out hero here and sont sent to tho the university to bo be chilled out it Is the only skull of its kind and too valuable to run any risk of at injury so it will bo be encased in plaster and taken out at once should the and find result aa as prot prof doug thinks the U of U will become the possessor of at ono of the greatest finds yet mado in the famous fossil field after tolling telling of the now discovery prof douglass gave a great number of interesting facts concerning fossils especially those in this field the tho skull Is the largest yet found in this geological age there have been 9 or 10 nearly perfect skulls found at the quarry ranging from 2 inches to this ono one which Is near ly a yard in length tho the dinosaurs found have been from 2 feet in length to over feet ions long the one now being un covered Is le one of abe largest the carnegie museum has the lower jaw of brontosaurus and part of skulls but they are aro not like this find the new now skelton looks as though it was practically complete the teeth are much different from those of the supposed brontosaurus heretofore found last week also the bones of a cant caul verous or flesh eating animal were found A large part of one skeleton has been found here before and several bones the ratio in the dinosaur quarry is about one bone of flesh eating jani animals mals to 60 or more of the herbivorous type some of the dinosaur skeletons are being worked out and described by the carnegie museum prof douglass stated that because some of those visiting the quarry and handling the excavated bones it Is necessary that some one always be in charge of any group visiting at the quarry he also la is greatly interested in the proposed bill by congressman colton which it if it passes will give a permanent and safe place for the display and housing of at the fossils for the scientists and tourists to see in the native fossil bed although he considers the appropriation asked cpr is not sufficient since writing the above mr york has discovered the lower jaw articulated and exposed two teeth this makes the skull complete and is considered by prof Dou douglass glahs as a rare occurrence some of the neck bones have also been uncovered |
