Show utah agriculture need needs listed in US AC report editor s note the following report was taken from the colorado river and utah agriculture ri a booklet put out by the utah state agricultural college lege experiment station elation logan il it s application to the uintah basin is evident and it merits close study 0 0 0 0 the agricultural pattern in utah has many strong points first of all ail the community and institutional patterns are rener gener 1 ally desirable A large majority y of the farms in the state have available within a reasonable distance a stance siance such community insil as schools including high or secondary schools churches retail stores and service establishments the majority also have medical tan kunfi dental and hospital api ices biccs Electric electrical iii iri ser I 1 vices telephone services roads 1 and marketing facilities arc available to the majority of the farms A second secona assel asset is ls the lne farm tarm people people most of them are reason ably ahli Y well educated arv fro they co coper cooper oper ate well together and are making good use of the resources at their disposal the basic philosophies of the majority lend stability ity and dignity to their business and profession however there are arc certain weaknesses weaknesses evident ev ident in in the me agri cultural pattern the impact of i all these weaknesses is unon onon upon first of all the income from farming most important is the 1 small ail all size of the average farm business the state was se settled under der conditions that T made small farms necessary with nat ural urai ura increase in population that has been relatively high for even a rural pioneer area this lem has not been corrected with the passing of years lack of i employment opportunities in i i nearby trade or industry has kept the population large in rei j lation to the farm lands A fun I 1 da mental need then for these farms is to increase the size of more productive employment business that is to provide on the farms this can be done by expanding acreage of crop cro P land per farm or by using exi asting lands more extensively I 1 in most aroas irons of the state neither is possible at it present be because catiNe of a lack of irrigation water more water is the tho great need the impact of this need is i upon ildon ryo raw 1 the net family income and ec cc onomy of the state A second weakness of agriculture Is in its inability be cause of inadequate irrigation water to adjust the type of farming to meet the tile present de mands of the m markets acts that utah uth 1 farms are in the most ageous gl ous location to supply the result of this affects not only farm income but also the of the consumers in those markets the home h me market and the california market need for example more dairy products more slaughter beef more pork and kinu pork pork products Dru dio aULtS more moru chick L niu nil K en meat more potatoes and similar products because they cannot be produced here it is necessary to pay transportation costs on them from the middle west in some cases beef for i 1 example the animals are ship ped from utah nevada or even california to the corn belt for fattening and then back again to the coast for consumption the only reason for this is that it is not possible under existing conditions to produce suf sufficient f i feed to fatten cattle here additional land luo inu is is available for lul lol I 1 the production of feed but suf focient water is not available to I 1 irrigate the land all other fac 1 tors nc ne cesary to satisfactory exist here in abundance soil climate labor institutions of every kind and competent management only water for irrigation is lacking with adequate irrigation i water existing farm businesses could be enlarged by irrigating and cropping land that is no now used for grazing or by means of using existing cropland for the production of more intensive crops or by increasing the I 1 yields of the same crops or by all three means lands that are now naw growing forage and feed crops could with adequate water grow fruit truck crops or such crops as potatoes sugar beets or canning crops some lands are arc now yielding 1 12 1 2 to 2 twi 4 of li hay ay iy or 10 to 35 buscis of f voilla with adequate water wt r yn yi eid vid ld 4 to 4 tons of hay or r 60 to 70 oo 00 bi heis hels of narley barley t pr r acre irr in lit addition to increasing the intensity anti inti dosity and ind the productivity of the existing farms many new flew farow could bo be dew developed loped the sur plis 1 ibor labor on oil tile the existing liritis fi could farm farin new lands p new lairds i could be just j as u productive or even v more pro P 10 than many of the exist ing croplands crop lands furthermore the toe iii new w are in th the vicinity of established commini I 1 ti ties they could immediately at little expense have all the benefits fit s of existing institutions |
