Show trout fishing in the mi hir hit w high higl ninda ninea s by wm F sigler and J B low what can you expect when you go in fishing rihn in hlyn liti grimit i hii jil Ji alve i area bs hi in the tn na 7 how n big K do the tho fish growa how good S esthe fishing and what is the best lure A A few u of nf t the things that were learned in this wilder ness area on a 10 16 igday day pack trip in samp august tl 1047 shed ch light 1 haht on rn some of these questions m on nursiss the tho no high lill ilin primitive area arnn f located in the tho e wa uinta mountains momi mosi aws wms in northern utah this range ex tends for miles in length and about tl 35 miles in width it is 8 the only K large largo range in the coun cun try tr MS lying in birzl an cast west tion the mountains moun ountria tins rise as an ant anticline ieline from the plateau to the north and to the south to an elevation of feet which Is the highest peak in utah it Is is conservatively estimated that there are over 1000 lakes in the range many above timber line which is about feet in elevation eleva elevi tion the party consisted of lee K kay a y educational supervisor utah f fish ish and game department fred reynolds game warden utah fish and game department arthur smith range manage manage ment department at the utah S state t a t c agricultural aerl Aeri cultural college clarence J 0 n e s professional s guide two sportsmen otto fife and edward grim and the two writers members of the wild life management department and the utah cooperative wildlife research unit at the utah state agricultural college briefly the route followed follow through the high uintah led first to paradise park thence to twin lakes via dry fork creek fish lake to whiterocks lake thence to freds lost lake and on to queen mirror cleveland and fox lakes thence to island lake lare and through andersons pass to the numerous lakes in henrys basin to red castle lakes on the north side of the range and finally over the divide into the numerous lakes in the head of the yellowstone river on the south side ide of the range mern Mein members bers bens of the party fished a total of hours and caught trout or fish per hour of fishing the fish were mostly cutthroat native followed by brook an drain bow in about equal numbers the average size was 9 inches although ono one 20 inch brook trout was taken almost all of the fish were taken on a fly rod dark colored flies worked the best this is surprising ing ipg since almost every trout stomach containing food had tying black ants of black flies in it A large percentage of the t h e stomachs were empty records were kept on fishing success for 13 lakes fishing was done whenever members of the party desired to fish or hungry for fish the age of of the trout was determined by reading the scales most of these fish were elther either two or three years old they were not growing as fast as trout from warmer waters probably the thi scarcity of food and a shorter growing season con tributes tri buted to this slow growth of the fish rish caught m in the 13 lakes fished or 74 per cent were cutthroat trout 53 or 14 per cent were rainbow trout and 4 47 7 or 12 per cent were i brook trout the fish planting program of the state fish and game de i part m ent U S fish and wild life service and of interested j men has been responsible for the success of the fishing in the high uinta lakes many lakes near or above timber line origin ally were without fish and many of the lakes reflect the cent planting of fish for ex ample in red castle lake only i rainbow trout of nearly all alu the sa same me length were caught while nt at other lakes such as those above five star lake only cut throat trout were caught brook trout were taken from a few lakes many lakes in this region were wore stocked about 1915 other others have not been stocked to date the opportunities for fish studies are arc great in this driml tive wilderness area of un 1 numbered lakes undoubtedly the fish carrying capacity is low and the food and water condl eions in the high lakes are not entirely optimum but the large numbers of lakes offer a great unexplored field of potential fishing water s 0 relatively relative lv narse in IT tg bai hai utah fish and game came bulit built bulletin n |
