friends it was a real experience to board the ship in new york As we left the star spangled banner was played and I 1 asked myself what I 1 we wa do ing and where I 1 thought I 1 was t going v r me just a little farm girl from vernal utah going to norway to represent million americans to the people of norway 1 I 1 felt very humble then and said a silent prayer jor or the constant help and gui guidance danci of our father in heaven we have bave a wonderful group gothia ato to the scandinavian countries we have proved a very congenial group so far no one has any strong dom qualities wp hav have had vesper Sir services vices on board each evening I 1 arn am thrilled at the deep j humility and faith they have hah we are all tired of the boat and inactivity and are anat anai ous to start our country ex peri per lence ence love etta 2nd and letter it has been a month today since our scandinavian group sailed from the new york harbor it if all the months go as rapidly as this one I 1 will be back in utah very soon we were very fortunate in arriving at oslo at the time of a huge agriculture exhibition we were told it would be gigantic but it exceeded our expectations much time effort and mony had gone into the exhibit the first one so large in over 40 years 1 spent two days at the fair and a couple more days could have been well spent there were about 80 young 4 11 II members who had set up tip a camp and were helping with the fair they had a nursery for children gave pony rides helped care for tile the animals etc many were selling tickets on 80 deep freezes front from which tile the mon vy ey is to go for more 4 11 II personnel I 1 was impressed with them very much they look ed so capable healthy and ambitious just t like 4 hers hera at home special holiday waterfalls pine trees and small farms nestled among the timber the waterfalls and streams contribute much to Nor ways economy in the form of power there are several large power stations in this area my second host farm Is about average size for norway it is six acres my host father his h is about 20 head of sheep ills his principle crop is hay with a garden perhaps you are wondering as I 1 did how they can maintain such a comfortable standard of living my host mother teaches school in the fhe winter and my host father sells sell s in aurance to help supplement the income many of the farms in this valley are very old my 4 11 II and school training has proven valuable the last couple of days my host moth er cr tied had to go 0 to o southern nor way my host sister an I 1 have been beeding strawberries and making strawberry jam my host sister said oh I 1 m io 0 o glad youre here I 1 don t know what I 1 would have done with all these berries I 1 know how to make jam the strawberries a danish variety are large and beautiful with a ver very y good flavor I 1 went toi to a staged wedding the other day it was typical of the weddings years yeara ago the ceremony took place in an old church at least years old after the the crowd followed the bride and groom to an old id museum where national dances were held many of the men and women wore their beautiful national costumes in the old days tile the wedding edding party sometimes 1 isted three or four days in one of the national dances a girl stood on a chair holding a hat fiat on a stick at least six feet off the ground the men a mountain some of the farmers in the valley have the right to own a in the Mount mountains allig it may be compared to our range permits in utah tills this Is a very old cus tom boin in norway and I 1 believe a very important one the women take tile the cows to the mountain while the men stay home in the valley vaclev to put in tile the hay flay etc this thia saves tho the grass in tile the valley for hay flay the farms are not large and every blade of grass counts for the long winter months tile the cows must be put in and fed hay flay for about eight mon th v of the year tit in previous years ears tile the women used all tile the milk for cheese and butter now a milk truck comes three times luring during the week to take the milk to tile he dairy so many do not make cheese I 1 was fortunate to have my host mother not only make chedie but other old recipes as 09 well some of the recipes start with 10 liters of milk all AH of the seters I 1 have seen had a large coppet
