Show U upper basin governors seek more river funds utah and new mexico governors friday in washington joined with sen arthur V watkins and rep william A dawson in a personal appeal to white house officials for an additional dit ional 8 0 6 million for the upper colorado river storage project the delegation asked that funds be increased for the fiscal 1939 1959 budget from the interior department recommended 66 million to 74 6 million the new amount would include 16 million for flaming gorge dam and to start the vernal unit stalnaker Stel draw the appeal was backed monday by governors ot of wyoming and colorado and se sen in joseph C D wyo who met with budget director roberl E merriam sen gov steve Me Nichols of Coll colorado arado and gov milward simpson ot of wyoming asked for a minimum of 75 million gov george D clyde of utah and gov edwin mechem of 0 new mexico made the appeal to government officials end and executives of the bureau of the budget we agreed in advance on continued on page Q 8 Goven governors jors continued from vage dace i 1 these figures gov clyde said 4 they were ba based sed on an analysis made by our advisors and represented what we feel Is the justifiable and practical remount necessary to keep these projects moving forward we do not feel that the amount Is I 1 excessive instead we regard it as very realistic other projects included in the total include glen canyon 42 million colo 2 million 1 advance planning 12 million and transmission lines and navajo darn dam in new mexico 12 million gov clyde said the meeting was very productive and it gave us an opportunity to present our feelings for the necessity of continuous logical con st ruction robert E merriam assistant budget director said that no ceilings for next years funds have been fixed f yet but that the administration would re commend as much money as could be justified |
