Show UNJUST TAXATION it seems that la in the important con ro versy now engaging the publio public relative to the tha so bo called tax imen dment we have lost eight of at least east two main points it la Is admitted even by many of the mine owners themselves that the mines have not paid taxes in proportion alon to other property that being true there ought to be a remedy it la Is plain that remedy can only be secured after the constitution has been amended it to la argued that this particular amendment gives either to the legislature or state board ot of equalization dangerous powers let 49 us grant that there Is something in that argument then what do we not now and have we not always given certain of our officials powers that may be used unwisely yes we have given to the president of the united states only lately powers which exceed in some respects any authority ever given to a king but we have two safeguards in the first place we must rely upon the honesty of our public servants or officers and most of them are and have hava been honest we have to trust under our form ot of government ern ment largely in the integrity ot men it Is really remarkable how bow few abuse the confidence cide reposed red 1 in them in the second place in the last analysis the proposition Is with the people after all it if officers are dishonest or in any way recreant to their trusts our laws provide a way tor for a change we can elect new ones Is it as likely that as much wrong will be done by public offic coffle lais als responsible to the people as Is being done by allowing a large and increasing amount of property to escape its just share ot of the burdens of carrying on our schools government and other public necessities it Is a N vell ell known fact that the greatest source ot of wealth in the state la Is the mines they have saved in taxes since 1916 1915 the enormous sum ot of farmers home owners an and a other classes of prop erty have had to pay this and will have to continue until an amendment to the constitution ot of the state Is passed at present mine owners pay on net proceeds the amount they clear above all expenses while other prop perty owners pay on full value this makes farmers and others pay from five to twenty times as much as the rich mine owners on each dollar of actual value vote yes on the Nat national lonAl prohibition hibi tion amendment no 1 let us us help put a stop to the illicit liquor traffic that comes from some states being wet while neighboring states i are dry though utah Is a dry state we must vote on prohibition to make the whole united states dry uintah county as well as the entire state should keep up its present reputation and pass this amendment unanimously |
