Show LEON PACK WRITES AN I 1 i interesting INTER ESTIMO LETTER LETTE p OF HIS impressions alet dat bat F A C 0 T 3 9 camp taylor ky ICY july 21 19 1918 IS dearest mother aou ou have hare asked me a number of times to tell you of my ot of army life etc M my thoughts and impressions Impress loua are many but I 1 will write a few to begin with the american army ts is a whole now at this early date la Is most moat too large an organization in regard to personnel equipment and business for most moat of us to imagine for or we have seen been but a few thou sand rand of at people together and but a few thousand horses wagons motor cars guns cannons or largo large rifles in my ton ten months in tho the army I 1 have seen quite a few thousand men coming and going from one camp to another overseas oversea a and in our own oan country but it is beyond belond me to picture in my minds eye the sight eight of hundreds of thousands of 0 big husky light hearted americans ot of their doings each day of how they art are fod fed clothed and equipped I 1 see sea but a very little of the business end of the army but what little I 1 have seen been show shola a me what a stupendous task we haie hae undertaken I 1 might say eay that the entire army is just one big business busL nees institution in which we are employees aud and must each day do our bit I 1 have heard and now firmly believe 1 that it takes at least two men to keep one lighting fighting mau man in the ahr a held for there are so BO many branches of this great institution and many men are arc employed in every branch ne e of at course in the training school do not do as much manual labor ae aa men in somo some of the other branches but e are required to do plenty along with our studies the more I 1 think of this army and the task before it the bettor better and more fully I 1 realize what our president al woodrow wilson is doing and has haa done lie certainly is a wonderful man dan and surely hue has competent and anal stants in secy mcadoo and sec daniels and other officials too numerous to mention they have a sob job on their hands and ve e must nil all help them the of i fibers are all doing what they can they are working hard reaching beaching men inen in every branch of the service I 1 am rather impatiently awaiting tho the time when I 1 may join their ranks and toach teach too rather than being taught ahe officers training school Is a necessity and one of which any man m might ight be glad to be a member we have as aa officers men who have stud hold led the work of the army both in theory and practice and are therefore competent instructors tio personnel of the outfit la ja mostly made up of college graduates bust ness men doctors doctora lawyers etc they are young men of course but men who are determined to mako make good officers and instructors not because of their desire to become officers but because of their wish to become educated in the work of the army to such an ail extent that they may in turn instruct others and in other ways help the country they all love A finer bunch of men I 1 have never met men with mith a personality idu du lation catlon and refinement men front from good homes and good associations big strong men men with the desire to learn to teach and to fight we here at the artillery school are taught the names and calibre of the different sized guns all about horses mounted and drill along with army regulations and paper work it Is a course the th a acquirement of 0 which any artillery officer must have a course which in ways both physical and mental Is very beneficial I 1 ahe he life of the soldier in general la Is not ono one either of ease or overwork the soldier Is very well cared for physically by hta his officers ile he Is welt well clothed and well fed lie ile Is cared tor for mentally and socially by his associations and has haa no time to search for trouble one thing Is sure and that Is in that a soldier can always find plenty to do lie he need never lack for amusement for it seems each outfit has either a few comedians or good singers the Y M C A has haa plenty of good books and provides good entertainment when a soldier isn t asleep tits hla officers can find something for him to do I 1 wish all matheri and fathers could feel that their sons are arc being bene fitted by being in the arm I 1 wish to sa say that the men are all in bettor better health than they have ever been before and are ara mentally and mv meally ally cleaner than they were in civil life it if parents could and would think of the army as an in institution of betterment for their sons thou then there he be so much sorrow over boys leaving home we lire are in a big struggle and may need all ava available flable men several thousands of 0 men may be killed but why should mothers or fathers worry so BO much when they know their boys are dying for their country and dying good in every way ay happy thus to die I 1 am not writing of my impressions pres lons alone but RISO also of men ot of my who ho have voiced their sentiments |
