I 1 have met all of the boys boya from uintah county who are here that I 1 know of and they all seem to be healthy and in good trim the former exposition grounds and buildings bull dinga are occupied by the soldiers of the navy division it la in estimated that there are over there here I 1 doubt I 1 there Is another training camp in the united states with as beautiful surroundings the boys who are stationed there are lucky indeed and should feel thankful hundreds of tropical trees plants and flowers lauy of which are blooming profusely are to be seen wherever he rever one looks the col anade walks paved drives pretty parks the magnificent exhibit and state buildings the zoo and the pipe organ recitals every afternoon are all as they were during the exposition maintained and kept up by the city as aa a part of the beautiful balboa park which codalata con alata of 1400 acres acrea I 1 frequently spend an afternoon there watching the boys drill it la Is to see them when the bugle calls for chow especially at noon imagine that many boys la in sailor uniforms all handsome chaps the cream of the nation as they forn form on the and march tour four abreast while the military band plays oh johnnie johnnee le oh johnnie every ono one stands erect keeping step and hundreds of them ure are singing the worda vorda of the song bong ahey I 1 hey are all happy hungry and healthy happy because because they are marching to chow hungry because they have walked miles and miles while drill ing and healthy because they keep 19 regular ular hours and have only L car tl tain amount of good substantial food i two vernal boys that I 1 know of are I 1 here wearing sailor uniforms Shir shirle leif daniels and sherman workman sharle enlisted tor for the aviation division and earns came here instead ot of going to pensicola florida because he could be near his bis parents and j visit with them when off duty when I 1 he arrived his parents and brother had left ills his wife is here though i shirley is in school now studying hard bard and will soon be transferred to north island and instructed in flying they are certainly schooling the boys at north island every day and all day aeroplanes aero planes or rather bli biplanes I 1 can be seen sailing around over the harbor aud and city one day recently while taking a boat trip around the he harbor I 1 counted 22 overhead at one time the government has purchased all of the north island consisting of 1200 acres and Is making of it one of the main aviation schools of the united states it Is ie an ideal location tor for several redions first it is level arid and cut off from the mainland which I 1 makes it secure tor for inquisitive visitors second there are no heave winds to interfere with flying except a very few days day in the year third the climate is ideal the temperature 1 only varying ten or fifteen degrees the year around camp korney kerney or linda vista as it w was as formerly called is being fitted iel d up tor for 8 00 0 0 soldiers there are about 40 there now it is estimated although it is a hard guess as 9 they are coming and going all the time the camp Is located on a high plateau north of san diego we 1141 M met e t dr cruickshank paul D dails avis hayes wilson E B D ala hampton rn ton wallace ilayev and roy stalnaker Stel t dr as you remember was vas formerly captain of a militia at steamboat springs colo I 1 ile he went to denver with his company and asked to bo be put in the cavalry where they all considered they belonged as most of the boys had boon raised in the saddle as cow punchers in northwestern colorado i instead dr cruickshank was made a I 1 lieutenant in the infantry co D and given a company of entire strangers while the cowboys were put in another division of the infantry and had to discard their high heeled boots the boys are patriotic alright and want to do their bit but jhc thc aro are slow blow in falling in love with this habit they have at the training e imps of marching twenty miles a day on toot foot they foel that they are bitter qualified and could be of more service to the government as aa cavalryman ni fin dr cruickshank has been ordered to take the medical examina tion and may bo be transferred to the J medical division roy I 1 paul davis and wallace haes are in the field artillery I 1 thinks he would have no trouble at all to quality qualify as a broncho buster in a wild ild west show sho that 1 would be more mere childs play to his job ile he with five other lads haye have charge of one of the cannons and they are expected to stay with that particular cannon at all times a during daring practice wherever revoIr it goes through thick or thin on top or on the boti torn tom six horses are hitched to the cannon and they seem beem to have a crady notion that they are expected to runaway whenever the order isi Is given to double quick and the driver says bays go over brush rocks trees treca and trenches at a pace that would shame a motorcycle they go and all hoy has to do is hang on to that cannon though the soldiers eold lers are receiving tho thorough fough training they are given liberal time for recreation on wednesday and saturday afternoons and S sunday they are off duty on those anys there are about twice as many men in uniform on the streets of san diego as there are civilians in con sequence san diego its ia a busy
