Show annex nort man ua h 10 colorado color ado ogden newspaper thinks it if only a matter of time Ti until that proposition will be presented editorial the call of Uin tati salt lake and ogden have finally decided most emphatically that there is danger of losing the great uintah basin to denver deaver they are even afraid that many people in this part of tile the state will w want a nt to be annexed to colorado for years the vernal express and other basin news papers the vernal vechal commercial club and other commercial clubs and hundreds of business men havo have been urging and pleading with salt lake and ogden especially the former to come over and help us but they have been too busy or else they have not considered it worth while to bother with a country cofar co so far away from a railroad there are thousands of people iu in both of those cities who real ly 13 do not know where the uintah basin is where the newspapers of salt lake and ogden have given one column of publicity the denver papers h have ave given ten the ogden examiner now comes out with a double column editorial headed the call of uintah it is very interesting reading 9 and is ia reproduced below almost in full it is as follows every citizen of ogden and weber county should get behind the publicity bureau in its efforts to secure the construction st of a railroad through the uintah basin the opening of this vast territory would work a revolution in the industrial life of the basin and tile the commercial life of ogden which is the natural outlet of trade for that territory the uintah basin waits only the coming of a railroad to make it one of the wonders of the west in adding to tile the worlds visible supply of commodities modi ties because it has been shut off aiom the rest el cl aba state by a mile high wall the majority of utah people do not realize just how important tile the development of mis basin is to the future of the entire state stata the uintah basin contains acres of land isolated from the balance of the state by a continuous chain of moun bains that have stood as a bar riez to the development that should have come years ago within the utah portion of th basin more than are susceptible to irrigation with great rivers of water mater accessible ces sible tor for this pur purpose poe not only for irrigation but they will furnish unlimited power to turn the wheels of progress while the altitude of the uintah basin is higher than that of weber county they car ca raise anything there that we are now raising here including all kinds of fruits and grapes that cannot be excelled anywhere the mineral resources are unlimited and in elude gold silver copper lead elude lead litte deposits are estimated at while one of the largest bodies of high grado grade soft coal in tile the wet west is there waiting the coming of a railroad for years denver has been casting a covetous eye on the uintah basin and Is now bending every effort to tap this fertile territory with the bof fat road the road has already been built to craig colo and there is only miles more to build on a down grade to take it right into the center of the uintah basin As the matter now stands trade conditions favor colorado with a railroad connection the basin with denver the tide of trade will turn that way while it is given out that the ultimate aim of the moffatt toad road is to build into salt lake it will be terminated in the uintah basin for years until such time as trade alliances with colorado can be made permanent under these theae conditions the valley will be settled by an alien population with prejudice toward utah many people who come to utah from the east bring with them a deep seated prejudice against the people of this state it Is fostered in ignorance and is soon overcome when these new comers meet the people of utah in trade and social rela lions but if colorado is to control the uintah basin that prejudice will be encouraged and it will only be a matter of time until they will be asking to be annexed to the state of colorado utah cannot permit this condition to come up we cannot afford to let another state develop this valuable territory and populate it with people who will eventually join in a movement to add one of the best valleys of utah to another state they will feel no allegiance to utah because they are dependent on colorado utah must develop ther own resources and save them to the state conservative estimates show that the union pacific could build a railroad raol road from park city to the center of th the uintah eUintah basin at a cost of that would open tho the territory to the north of the state and make ogden the center of trade this one move in development i would double the population of ogden within a few years and the population of the uintah basin would be increased to gentlemen of ogden this is your opportunity it has been knocking at your door ever since the pioneers came over the trail it IF is time to cast oft off apathy the call comes to you now as a warning that you adjust act or the opportunity will be lost failure has never been written in the history of utah its pages are bright with wonderful achievements wo we have led the van in industrial progress and taught the world how to make the desert a garden will we stand aside while colorado annexes one of the richest and most productive portions of tho the state men of ogden you are known for doing things well in the council of states your words avd and your deeds have made history foreign nations have paid tribute to your work denver needs people on the land surrounding that city she has grown in civic development andis now calling on the rural districts to rescue her from business peril if denver isto Is to continue her progress she must continued on page 3 t ANNEX UTAH TO COLORADO continued from page 1 have more pi producers on the land and the uintah basin la Is an inviting field ogden needs the same development if this city is to continue the achievements of the nast dast it must come through the development of the natural resources that have waited for a century utah needs every acre of tillable soil roil in the state we can af afford ford to take no chances our farms and our mines should be operated by people who believe in us and with us utah must stand by her own let eveia man in ogden assist the publicity bureau in this effort to develop the uintah basin we cannot afford af ford to i lest est content with the achievements of the past the history of these northern counties I 1
