Show BEN E RICH DIES IN NEW YORK CITY of eastern states state buslon passes aay AH ay on lwe eve of departure for utah I 1 I 1 dr homer leomer B E rich and mrs A V watkins received the shocking news of the death of their father den ben B E rich in new york last saturday night mrs diana F rich his hig wife and benjain L rich of salt lake and dr lorin loran L U rich of ogden the latter his sons were present when death came the mother and sons left new york tuesday for salt lake with the body dr rich and wife and A V watkins and wife left here during the eek and will be in salt lake when the body arrives this afternoon death was due to a complication of diseases tho the result of a nervous breakdown several weeks ago mr rich had been released from the presidency of the HaFi eastern tern states mission and was preparing to come to continued on oil page 2 ben E rich dies WM 96 r york city continued from page 1 utah for a root reat when his hie condition became suddenly worse mr rich was one of the roost most widely known men in the state and from hla his early youth took an active interest in the affairs of the mormon church and also in the states industrial and political growth thirty years ago he served the church as a missionary in england and upon his return to salt lake continued his active work in the church ben 0 rich was born in salt lake city november 71 7 1856 1866 when 10 years old he vaa as baptized in the mormon church and was a member of the quorum of the seventies for thirty ono scars jn in hta his boyhood he was employed twelve years as a salesman for the Z C M 1 I ile he was married in ogden december 27 1877 to diana parr farr and was the father of eight children six boys boya and two girls much of tile his early married life wits was passed in ogden where for beneral years he followed the mercantile busin business tva ile he was a member of the ogden city council from 1883 to 1886 and it was during this time that tie ho drifted into literature and produced the book mr durant of salt lake city which presented the doctrinal features of mormonism in narrative style from 1885 until 1888 he was recorder rot order of county ile he became prominent in politics shortly af afterward ter ward taking an active part in the peoples party until its disappearance pe arance in 1892 when national lines were drawn dran a condition of things which he so his friends say perhaps was more instrumental in bringing about than any other man mail in the and he entered the ranks of tho the republican party where he remained up to the time of his bis death in this capacity he became a delegate to six national republican conventions in 1893 mr rich moved to idaho and at once bouce became prominent in public affairs ile he was twice chairman of the republican state committee and executive committee and waa as a delegate to tho the national convention from idaho in 1896 afterwards he was appointed president of the aou sou thein states i mission of the mormon church and during his service there published a 4 weekly paper known as tho the southern star which was do voted to the interests of the church in the southern states mr air rich was an able speaker and writer ile he remained president ot 0 the southern states mission until about five eais ago when he was made head bead of the eastern states mission which post he held until reli relied eNed a few ew weeks ago president rich is surN survived ived by his widow mrs mra diana F rich abo for several bears eara has made her home at center nille and eight children den ben L rich of salt lake dr L F rich of ogden fred rich of salt lake dr homer E rich of vernal mrs alvin C strong of salt lake don onell oneil rich who la is at present on a mission in ne neu york mrs lira vivian watkins of vernal and frank cannon rich who lives with hla his mother at Cent centerville erville mr rich had four full brothers and I 1 they are D I 1 P rich of boise and fred C rich mrs marndo pratt and mrs mra sarah rich miller fill all of salt lake A number of relatives reside in the uintah basin and include mrs mra jane rich widow of charles rich a brother of deceased joseph rich vernal arthur rich vernal charles rich roosevelt mrs clarence johnson roosevelt mrs goo young fort ducheane cheale and mrs james sabey roosevelt the funeral services will be held next sunday in the salt sal t lake tabernacle tabei nacle the burial will be in the cemetery at Cent centerville erville |
