Show PROPOSES SCHOOL legislation mako blake change in date dat of tak ing census It corn coin lUl sory during entire terin tenn legislation pertinent nent to the lct bet derment of the conditions under andor which the public schools of the state operate la Is due for recommendation to the legislature by the codo code corn com mission appointed by the legislature ot of two years ago the la Is comprised of B E 0 gowans gowana state superintendent of public instruction A R darnes barnes attorney general G N child assistant superintendent of the city bC carl hopkins superintendent of alpine school district dietr lct and W J williamson superintendent of the eureka school district it will be proposed by the com inis Blou that the taking of the school census bo be done in october in stead of 0 july it la Is pointed out that the taking of the census in july results in failure to properly locate iu in the census records pupils vilio nho are arc away amay from their regular places of resident re aldene e during the months of vacation all schools are in session by october and the taking of the census at that time would insure noure the proper location locati oa of all pupils it will also be proposed by the commission that the law be modified to make compulsory attendance apply to the entire school term instead of thirty weeks it Is argued by members of the commission that those who fall to attend school for the entire period are usually those who most need to do so BO the idea la Is to place the option in matters of enforcing attendance with the attendance or truant officer the recommendations will incle include do a suggestion that the title truant officer he be replaced by that of at officer it to Is also the purpose of the commission to have the law so BO modified that knyper any person who contributes to the delinquency of a pupil in giving him work or employment calculated to induce him to remain away from school without special provision shall bo be responsible under the law under the present law an employer of a school child is not responsible for failure of the employed to attend school yet another recommendation to be made and one of far reaching importance from the point of finance and efficiency will be that with regard to textbooks under the present law the textbooks are subject to change every five years it has been cd by the commission that in some instances there la Is need of change oftener than this and in some not so often the plan Is to have a minimum of three and a maximum of eight years tor for the duration of the adoption of a textbook under this arrangement any textbook that proved unsatisfactory or out of late date could be shelved at the end of three years |
