Show NEVADA MINING united states geological survey Is siles aes report on an the tingly min MI contract ct and elk mountain distro ta nevada As the result of a geologic field examination made in 1910 by P F 0 schrader Sch rador in elko county nov the tha united states geological geologic it I 1 survey has haa just published a report on the jar brylke contact and elk mountain mining districts dietric ts the area comprising these districts is about 35 miles long lon and 26 miles wide and covers cevers about 1400 squar miles it lies ilea in the northeastern part of 0 the tha region kno n as the nevada riat plateau cau at a fineral ele elevation atlon of about feet and contains parts of wo grand features of this western country the groat basin on the south and the snake arher valley on the thol north and the Inte intervening roning divide crosses its southern corners corner the devils region the rugged character of the jar hidge di la Is indicated by its ita name which mr mir schrader tells us derived from the indian india n name jala jais habich meaning the devil traditionally tio nally he says it Is applied to this district from indian association of dlabola lla bolc power with the cata Nolean volcanism ism suggested by the rugged mountains high peaks deep cin ci ons anti and hot springs of the region and probably also from local eruptions of lavas which the indiana may have haie witnessed in the adjoining nake river valley within the last ed as ai manifestations of the evil spirit and the he alvas perhaps being correl abed in origin with similar ones ex posed in the Jar harbidge jarbidge bidge mount mountains gold discovered Dle covered by sheep herder harder tho the first gold ore discovered in the th district Is reported to lift hae e been found in 1904 by a sheep tended but the dis discovery coNery that led to tile rounding founding of the present camp and district nas as made in 1909 and also weekly up III to the present time the die discoveries have continued the are dally daily proving neou raging and substantial and the district as a whole Is more than fulfilling the promise of its surface howlings howl analyses of the ores are gi glan in detail and it la is of particular interest at the present time that in some of these an analyses alysea large percentages cen centa geft of potash have been de the ores of the contact district dietric j j are arc almost wholly copper ores b but u t they contain also small amounts of and gold and in some portions of the district lead manganese and zinc ores are found the early prospectors searched for gold but mr schrader describes a number of coopper that have been opened 1887 many of them hav ing been operated on a rather large cale with good railroad facilities which chich ate aie promised in the near fatur a new impetus will he be given to getting out the ore mineral deposits were known in the alk mountain district as ae eaily is as 1890 since which time work has been carried on there each year though the district as a whole la Is still in the prospect stage the chief metal of this district la Is copper and gold and are associated with it descriptive and maps mapa the report describes in dewi detail the ac geology and operations of the region and la Is uc re compan led by photographic illustrations showing the topographic feature and rock formations by vein and claim maps indicating the general distribution of the deposits and by geologic and topographic maps of the areas described this report which is published as bulletin IA A reconnaissance of the Jar harbidge jarbidge bidge contact and elk mountain mining districts elko county nevil can be obtained on application to the director of the U S geological survey washington D C |
